Description
Beyond Salvation is a 1989 album by the Australian hard rock band The Angels, released under the band name “The Angels from Angel City”.
The Angels are a hard rock band that formed in Adelaide, Australia in 1970. The band later relocated from Adelaide to Sydney and enjoyed huge local success until well into the 1990s. For the purposes of international release, their records were released under the names Angel City and later The Angels From Angel City. On 12 September 2006, The Angels were featured on a postage stamp for Australia Post as part of their Australian Rock Posters.
One of the best albums in their catalogue. Beyond Salvation went straight to #1 on the charts when it was released in 1990, and spawned 5 hit singles, among them “Let The Night Roll On” and the now-classic “Dogs Are Talking”. I highly recommend it.
CHR 1677 U.K pressed LP.

Greatest Hits You’ve Never Heard
The Angels are one of the best bar bands you’ve probably never seen. They’re a bit like AC/DC with literary aspirations if you can imagine that. (Bon Scott was instrumental in getting them their first record deal.) They picked a bad time to make an entrance though. Their first album, “Face to Face” came out in 1978. It was huge in Australia but faced problems in the US. They had to change their name to Angel City to avoid legal issues with hair metal band Angel. Their pub rock debut was issued in between the punk rock of the late 70’s and the synth pop of the 80’s. The band also wound up releasing markedly different versions of their albums in the US and Australia. I got this because I liked the vinyl version.  It’s a solid hour of hard driving Aussie rock. I prefer their earlier material, but I’ve never heard a bad album from these guys, whatever they’re called. In fact, this release is a greatest hits album so it’s not a bad place to start. Sadly, lead singer Doc Neeson died of cancer in June 2014. If you like your rock straight, no chaser, you’ll like the Angels.

known in their native Australia as THE ANGELS they have written some of the best hard rock anthems of all time. Forget ac/dc this is real Aussie pub rock. beyond salvation rocks

This is a goddamn good LP. It reminds me of a mix between AC/DC and George Thorogood. Damn good tracks, played with an energy, that makes many sleeze bands look pale and boring. This is an album without any weak tracks. Highly recommendable.

Albums don’t ever get much better than this. The version of “”Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again”” on here is worth the whole LP. Every track is fantastic how this band never hit in the US is beyond me.

Like AC/DC and especially Rose Tattoo and rocks and rolls. “”Marsielles””, an earlier Angel City classic was a favorite live staple in early Guns-n-Roses shows. Obviously someone was listening to some good rock from down under.

“”Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again”” is the best track on here, followed closely by “”Let The Night Roll On””. Me being a bloody yank, still doesn’t mean THE ANGELS or ANGEL CITY has made a serious impact on my life. One of my favorite bands of all time, and I wish more and more releases would appear on this site. I can honestly say, I give their music all the credit for a many schooner consumption sessions.
like AC/DC without the high pitched screaming of Bon Scott/Brian Johnson. Driving power chords fuel the memorable melodies. well placed guitar solos fill out the song writing. this is relentless head boppin power rock.
The Angels from Angel City – Beyond Salvation (Chrysalis, 1989)
As per the usual with this excellent Aussie band, the album came out in different versions in the US and Australia. According to Bob Yates’ excellent bio, Chrysalis wanted the group to rerecord older songs for the American release. The Aus version would feature all new songs. It had 11 tracks and the US one had 9.
Of those 9 tracks, only 3 are new. It’s rather an interesting combo, to my mind. The group sounded like they were in party mode here. The new tracks “Dogs Are Talking,” “Rhythm Rude Girl,” and “Let The Night Roll On” contrast sharply in style and (especially) lyrical content with the rerecorded takes of “Who Rings The Bell,” and “I Ain’t The One,” but oh well. I like them all anyway. (A rocking song’s a rocking song!)
The Aussie version has several gems on it, including the sleazy riff rocker “Back Street Pickup,” the beautful “Bleeding With The Times,” and the fast and catchy title track. Why oh why was “Beyond Salvation” not on the US release? It’s such a good one. Thankfully, the Aussie Beyond Salvation is available to stream (Amazon Music for me).
Altogether, quite an interesting period and batch of songs for the group. Its production, like the earlier Two Minute Warning, sounds great, too.
