Another great, but overlooked, Vicious Rumors album.
As influential as Vicious Rumors was, you’d think they would get a bit more recognition. As it stands, it seems like only the true metal faithful give this band the credit they deserve.
1994s Word of Mouth was the bands fifth studio album, and is just the kind of unapologetically metal album that you’d expect from a band like Vicious Rumors. Never mind Nirvana and the so-called alternative scene in the early 90s. For Geoff Thorpe and company it was all about the metal. There are elements of thrash metal and elements of American power metal, but the album refuses easy classification. The term “heavy metal” is really the only appropriate descriptor for Word of Mouth. Geoff Thorpe delivers some crushing riffs on this album, which are balanced perfectly by Carl Alberts thundering vocals. Overall its just a great heavy album when that was fast becoming a rare occurrence.
Word of Mouth is still a terrific power/thrash album from a highly underrated band. Word of Mouth also serves as a fitting final offering from Carl Albert, who was tragically killed in a car accident shortly after the albums release.

Edition Notes: The original 1994 release came in a jewel case and only had 12 songs. My favorite is this, that includes two bonus cover songs – Led Zeppelins “Communication Breakdown” and the Rolling Stones’ “Paint it Black.”

Word of Mouth – A long lost Vicious Rumors gem
I’m assuming that very few have heard this very cool album.

This is a very diverse offering from one of the greatest American power metal bands of all-time. Many tempos are explored as well as tones and variety on the volume of the sonics. Song writing is stellar throughout and this is Geoff Thorpes finest hour as a soloist.

The drum sound is quite kicking – almost a perfect combination of a tight snare and pounding double-bass. Very tight playing on display.

The album starts with a scorcher then dips to an emotional middle where Carl Albert shines on “Thunder and Pain parts 1 & 2” then concludes with a thrashing blitzkrieg on “Ministry of Fear.”
