2006 was a good year for the Stoner Rockers STONER KINGS. Album recordings, dubbed ‘Fuck The World’, featured guest performances by such names as Alexi Laiho from CHILDREN OF BODOM, Marco Hietala from NIGHTWISH and Pasi Rantanen from THUNDERSTONE. Starbucks (the singer of the band) pro-wrestling career took a significant upward turn in June when he won the Italian heavyweight championship, defeating longstanding title holder El Dinamico in an outdoor match. This victory marked the first time in Italian history that a foreign wrestler snatched the heavyweight title. In August 2006 STONER KINGS recorded a new song, entitled ‘Mass Blast’, for use by a sports nutrition company in Finland called FuncFood. On December 2nd 2006 in Vantaa at Fight Club Finlands ‘Winter War 2006’ event, “The Canadian Rebel” StarBuck defeated Bernard Vandamme of Belgium to become the new European heavyweight wrestling champion, marking the first time in history that a wrestler of Finnish ancestry had held the title. Fuck The World as an album title This is the second album of the mighty STONER KINGS. And despite their band name, its far from being pure Stoner Rock. Only some grooves in the guitar work can be considered Stoner-like. Besides that the Finns create an extremely cool and highly powerful mix of 70s/80s Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. For people who dont like Heavy Metal, this is a band and album they will love to hate. the band leads you through over 40 minutes of cracking rockers, excellent to get a party going.
An important reason as to why this record sounds great is because of the über-production. It is an absolute powerhouse; many bands can and should be jealous of it. The riffs sounds extremely fat, the vocals powerful and the whole rhythm section is perfectly mixed in. Pompous, Arena like, would be the best way to describe it. Then there is the great voice of Starbuck the only non-Finnish person in the band, hes from Canada. He sounds like the kind of guy who has a great, clean and powerful voice, but has been drinking copious amounts of alcohol the night before the recording so that he passed out. Then the rest of the band finds him the next day completely wasted on a couch and say: hey dude! We need to do a recording, remember? And thus he crawls to the studio, taking the only true cure for a hangover: more beer (the truth, believe me.). This results in a great vocal performance which is indefinitely powerful but where the use of alcohol is obvious in the most positive sense: just a small raw edge at times. And thats great of course; Lemmy knows it works for over 30 years.
The first half of the CD focuses on powerful rockers like the brilliant opener Mantric Madness, Doomsday Sunrise with a fantastic Classic Rock chorus or the groovy Cyclone. The second half of the music seems to be a little darker, more doom-y if you will. This does result in some surprising bits like the ending of Angel Weed which features fine acoustic guitars as well as a didgeridoo and Black Lotus even has some nice female vocals.
Really, this is a great and fun Rock album, where everything is right: majestic vocals, great riffs and solos, tight rhythm section and all that in a mighty bombastic production. If you dont mind a bit of a pretentious attitude I can warmly recommend this album. Did I also mention it features guest performances by Marco Hietala, Alexi Laiho and Pasi Rantanen
