Sick and Wierd Magazine L.A. says about the Record: The Skunk Allstars are an up and coming band from Wolverine Records based out of Germany. Although the band itself is relatively unknown outside of it’s native Europe, many of the group members have worked and performed internationally with some well-known acts (namely the Long Beach Dub Allstars and Mad Professor). It is obvious that there’s quite a bit of musical experience here, and a lot of different influences. You’ll find a worldly mix of sounds on this release, which flies in the face of the musical boundaries and the “scene-ism†which has plagued underground music over the last few years. From the get-go there’s ska, reggae, punk rock, rap, dub, electronica, and even a little Louis Armstrong. The Skunk Allstars incorporate strong musicianship with socially aware and intelligent lyrics (which are sung in English for the most part), and they came out with a pretty good end product. What I enjoyed most about this album was the diversity of it. Every song has something new and interesting in it, and it creates a fun and energetic atmosphere. The over-all tone of the album is one of optimism. This is captured perfectly in the cover art and insert, which perfectly compliment the title and music inside. Every band has a statement; a reason for being. To me, the Skunk Allstars are saying “Yeah, the world can be a pretty dark place sometimes. Just smile and wait for the sun to rise againâ€. All in all, this is a very solid release from one of the many promising new bands on Wolverine Records, and I’d recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the genre, or who just wants to relax and have a good time with some catchy tunes.
