5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating early material from this innovative prog band.
If you have discovered the delights of Pallas I am preaching to the converted, if not read on and see if I can tempt you to savour the delights of a truly PROGRESSIVE band. In the mid eighties Pallas released two albums, “”The Sentinel”” ( a classic ) and “”The Wedge””.
There are excellent moments, particularly on the tracks “”Crown of Thorns”” and “” They showcase the talents of original vocalist Euan Lowson. These are two excellent pieces of intense, passionate, thought provoking and indeed controversial pieces of music that deserve to be heard by a wider audience.
If you are keen to sample Pallas for the first time I would recommend either this one “”The Sentinel””.Buy this, stick it on the Hifi, pour a beer, turn off the lights, turn up the volume and take yourself back to the early eighties, feeling the shivers run down your spine as Euan cackles manically on “” The Ripper “” and performs self crucifixion at the end of “” Crown of Thorns””. You can almost smell the dry ice!

5.0 out of 5 stars A trip down memory lane for one of the best “”unknown”” bands
This album is must for any old fans of Pallas, and in fact for anyone discovering them now for the first time. This collection of tracks demonstrates a range of styles, and introduced early fans to Pallas “”classics””, one or two of which are still prominent in their live shows today. The Album opens with the title track, Arrive Alive, which is in no uncertain terms a full on red blooded classic song. This version, rough and ready, is the first song I ever heard by Pallas and one everybody should have on their favorite cruising in the car compilation tape. This track was rerecorded for “”The Sentinel”” album, and although the production on that version is far superior to this one, this one has an urgency and vigour that is still apparent when played live today. Queen Of The Deep, and The Ripper, here performed live, show the bands roots and influences. Genesis, Pink Floyd and Rush all get a look in here. Large instrumental passages give away the fact that the bands singer at the time, Euan Lowson, was prone to spend time changing into various costumes. The last live track, Crown Of Thorns, is another classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars The music on this is great- no doubt about it. Queen of the Deep is a great song; The Ripper is a creepy atmospheric song that effectively and dramatically pushes you inside the mind of a serial killer. Euan Lowson is an interesting singer to say the least. Crown of Thorns is a nice song but it rips off Genesis too blatantly. These guys are really a good band and damn if they didn’t capture the spirit of the 70s prog by revitalizing the prog scene in the 80s. So bless these guys along with Marillion, Pendragon and a few others.

I originally bought this album on it’s release in cassette form, I also own it on vinyl & cd. Sadly, due to the recording being somewhat rough & ready, there is no real benefit to the sound on the cd version. As for the content of the record, well, I could reel off a list of superlatives that still wouldn’t do it justice. There are Pallas classics a-plenty on here, Heart Attack, Crown Of Thorns, Queen Of The Deep, and, of course, The Ripper. At this stage of their career, the emphasis really was on live shows, and, boy, they did not disappoint. As well as the excellent musicianship on display here, they also provided a stunning visual show, centered around vocalist Euan Lowson who has been compared to Peter Gabriel in his Genesis days. The comparisons can be left at the theatrical aspect, as, vocally, there is little similarity. From Niall Mathewsons soaring guitars, through Ronnie Browns exquisite use of the Novatron, and Graeme Murrays excellent backing vocals, bass/12 string & bass pedals, the band tick all the right boxes. All in, I thoroughly recommend this album as, in my opinion, the very best of the ’80’s prog revival.
