Hugh Cornwells third proper solo album since leaving The Stranglers, Hi Fi, ranks with the most confident and accessible work of his career. Any fans of Cornwells old band should keep in mind that this most clearly recalls the latter-day pop-influenced Stanglers material, rather than the thuggish misogyny of their earlier work, and while Cornwell certainly sounds a bit cranky on several of these tunes, “One Day at a Time” and “Lay Back on Me Pal” reflect a welcome compassion that hes gained with the years. (Don’t worry, though — “Leave Me Alone” and “Putting You In The Shade” prove hes still got plenty of problems with people. Nice to know some things never change.) For the most part, Hi Fi is pleasingly tuneful, with strong pop melodies and a winning psychedelic undertow on tunes like “All the Colours of the Rainbow,” “The Prisons Going Down,” and “Gingerbread Girl” (the last of which appears in two versions on the albums American release — the string-fortified original take, and a dubwise electronic remix from Black Dog Productions). Cornwell’s vocals and songwriting are in fine shape, Laurie Lathams production is clean and serves the material well, and if Hi Fi isn’t exactly a startling step forward for Cornwell, it shows he still has a few tricks left up his sleeve, and its a far stronger and more enjoyable album than anything the Stranglers have coughed up since the artists departure. (The American edition of Hi Fi also features two bonus live cuts, with Cornwell performing solo acoustic versions of a pair of Stranglers oldies, “Golden Brown” and “Always The Sun”; the performances are fine but unexceptional, and the recording quality isn’t especially good.)

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Album.
Master songwriter Hugh Cornwell assembles his best collection of songs since 1984s stellar “Aural Sculpture” with the Stranglers. The fine cache of tunes is further enhanced by Laurie Lathams(who also produced “Aural Sculpture”) brilliantly inventive production. This is one of those great records you can put on and take a mental journey with from beginning to end and never want to skip a track…its that good. Stand-out tracks:”Gingerbread Girl”, “Leave Me Alone”, “The Big Sleep”, “Teasy Weazy” and the climactic “The Prisons Going Down” (a tear-jerker of a song about estrangement, isolation, longing, and then finally, resignation- also has the best damn Harmonica solo I’ve heard in quite a while). “Hi Fi” finds Cornwell suddenly at the top of his game as a writer, and never sounding better. A masterwork!

5.0 out of 5 stars Old and less old,
This album gives a new approach of Hugh’s music, with a set of new songs bringing us great sounds never met before in Hugh’s career even in Stranglers period and ended with two classics solo unforgettable interpreted in a marvellous way like he used to do during his recent concerts: I saw him a few times latterly in concert and I have appreciate it, I am happy to find him back in the same way on this very good CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars a worthy new collection of pop songs.
Ok I’ve been a Stranglers fan for years, so I had to check this one out. After a couple of listens I can say that this a great cd.
Creative lyrics/arrangements as per usual, but with a psychedelic feel to it. If you like thoughtful pop music wit a bit of an edge check this one out. Particular favorite tracks: Gingerbread Girl, Miss Teasy Weazy, and Prisons going Down.
