Description

Fort are a stoner/psychedelic/hard rock five-member band from the northern New South Wales coastal town of Byron Bay, Australia. The band formed in 2000 as a result of band members’ mutual admiration of the 90’s stoner rock band Kyuss, so the band had a strong Kyuss influence from the start. Within their first year they had released their debut EP Tripping In The Vast Exterior. They recorded a bunch of dirty, loud tunes which were released on the now discontinued EP, Tripping In The Vast Exterior. In 2001, they released their second EP Skychaser, which received national airplay, followed by expansive touring. Check out the video of the opening song Momentum. This video doesn’t have the best audio quality but should give you an idea about the band’s sound.

Forte harness what I can only call the “”Aussie Sound””… basically AC/DC at varying tempos sprinkled with various influences. They all sound damn good, though. I gotta hand it to them, the Aussies know how to handle power chords and big production.

Forte are somewhat akin to countrymen Daredevil. Both play jacked-up power rock, both have ace rhythm sections, and both are swinging. The only difference is that Daredevil have a more of a Iommi sense of groove. Forte stick to Angus-isms, albeit Angus on psychedelics. I also prefer Daredevil Dave’s vocal delivery, but fuck it, they are both damn good and both worthy of a listen. Great driving music or a soundtrack to lift a pint to. Just make sure that it’s one or the other. If You get a DUI, you are automatically a fuck-up and nobody will talk to you except other fuck-ups. And that’s no way to be.

‘Forte’ but not beaten
From the Northern home of the big ballsy, bluesy rock, Rhythm Ace Records, comes yet another group to join the ranks of the fledgling stoner rock movement. Opening track ‘Momentum’ has all the hallmarks of a stoner rock classic-gentle intro, huge big driving riffs and an unbelievably melodic chorus. This track is sure to take the band places! ‘Hellbender’ is probably what it feels like inside your head after you have been on one. It’s subtly aggressive with frantic riffs. ‘Big Brother’ has the swinging groove that is deep and rumbling, akin to the likes of Black Sabbath, but there’s probably a nod to the later stoner bands in there as well. There is a big wall of sound going on with this song which is very effective. ‘Outspoken’ has a Mark Of Cain feel to it, and probably with an equal amount of restrained intensity as the afore mentioned South Australians can produce. ‘Red Desert Rolls’ picks up the pace a bit, which along with its desert rock could have a shade of punk going on, getting its heaviness not from the groove but the beat. They return to the massive groove (and I do mean massive in this case) with ‘Goldencoat’ which is a little bit ala Kyuss in some parts. Its straight up rock done good. Even though short and sweet as a mini-album of seven tracks ( and one of those was a brief piece which sounded like a guitar imitating a harp), its still big enough to leave a dirty big footprint on your head and you wanting them to treat you rough again in the near future.
