Cipher System are another great Swedish melodic death band that i’ve just discovered, and Central Tunnel 8 shows astonishingly good form for a debut album. Soundwise, this has a lot in common with Soilwork and the more recent Dark Tranquility albums such as Character and Fiction, with pounding downtuned thrashing and thick riffing combined with spacey, creepy keyboards. Yet, id say Cipher System are a bit heavier and more brutal then both bands, and they really go for the throat like there is no tomorrow, yet there’s also a fair bit of classic metal riffing and a few subtle breaks here and there. Occcasionally, they sound like a much heavier Colony-era In Flames, and thats not a bad thing in my book. We also find a touch of more atmospheric, almost orchestral keyboard work thats kinda like Spectral from Skyfire. Anyways, while not hugely original, Cipher System can certainly hold their own and play with a biting, aggressive passion thats hard not to get into. While its obvious that the band are still in their formative years and they have a ways to go before they reach the divine heights of bands like Dark Tranquillity and Disarmonia Mundi, if they keep penning crackers like ‘State Unknown’ they’ll get there pretty soon
My only real problem is the vocals, which are bit too metalcore for my tastes, but i warmed to them eventually. All in all a good solid debut from these Swedish lads, and i look forward to hearing mroe from them in the future. Fans of early Soilwork, Dark Tranquillity, Disarmonia Mundi, Callenish Circle, In Flames, Mors Pricipium Est and the like should check this out.
