“Heaven Is a Place on Earth” is a song recorded by Belinda Carlisle, the lead singer of The Go-Gos. Written by Rick Nowels and Ellen Shipley, and interpolating the aria “Schlafe, mein Liebster, genieße der Ruh'” from Johann Sebastian Bachs Christmas Oratorio, it hit Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 5, 1987, becoming Carlisles only U.S. chart-topper with or without The Go-Gos. A month later it hit number one on the UK Singles Chart and held the spot for two weeks. The song reached number one in many other countries, among them Switzerland, Ireland, Sweden, South Africa and Norway. The song also reached number three in Germany, number two in Australia, and number six in Italy. It is widely considered to be Carlisles signature song due to its success on the charts, and how it has remained relevant even today. The song was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

The promotional video was directed by Academy Award-winning actress Diane Keaton and features an appearance of Carlisles husband Morgan Mason. It also features children wearing black masks and a cape while each of them holding an illuminated plastic globe. Carlisle appeared wearing a sampo and later changed to a black off-the-shoulder blouse. The video was partially filmed at Six Flags Magic Mountain theme park in Valencia, California, on the Spin Out ride.

Carlisles backup vocalists on the track include songwriters Nowels and Shipley as well as Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas and songwriter Diane Warren. It also featured Thomas Dolby on keyboards.

Lyrics
Ooh, baby, do you know what that’s worth?
Ooh, heaven is a place on earth
They say in heaven, love comes first
We’ll make heaven a place on earth
Ooh, heaven is a place on earth
When the night falls down
I wait for you and you come around
And the world’s alive with the sound
Of kids on the street outside
When you walk into the room
You pull me close and we start to move
And we’re spinning with the stars above
And you lift me up in a wave of love
Ooh, baby, do you know what that’s worth?
Ooh, heaven is a place on earth
They say in heaven love comes first
We’ll make heaven a place on earth
Ooh, heaven is a place on earth
When I feel alone, I reach for you
And you bring me home
When I’m lost at sea I hear your voice
And it carries me
In this world we’re just beginning
To understand the miracle of living
Baby, I was afraid before
But I’m not afraid anymore
Ooh, baby, do you know what that’s worth?
Ooh, heaven is a place on earth.
They say in heaven love comes first
We’ll make heaven a place on earth
Ooh, heaven is a place on earth
In this world we’re just beginning
To understand the miracle of living
Baby, I was afraid before
But I’m not afraid anymore
Ooh, baby, do you know what that’s worth?
Ooh, heaven is a place on earth
They say in heaven love comes first
We’ll make heaven a place on earth
Ooh, heaven is a place on earth
Ooh, heaven is a place on earth
Ooh, heaven is a place on earth
Ooh, heaven is a place on earth
Ooh, heaven is a place on earth
