The sleeve for Great White’s fifth album Hooked was photographed by fashion photographer John Scarpati, who also worked with Rush, Warrant, Poison, Stryper, L.A. Guns, Magnum and more. The cover, which featured a nude female model being hoisted from the sea on a large hook, was judged too risqué by the label and subsequently replaced by Rush art director Hugh Syme. Syme’s alternative cover gently lowered the nice lady into the sea, submerging her offending parts, so that only her head and arms remained above water.

Great White were a terrific rock band. This album provides 10 glimpses of the rock that GW rolled the best. None of it is novel or ground breaking but if this don’t float your boat you better check for a pulse!

The heavy guitar of Mark Kendall and the shrill voice of Jack Russell unfold a melodious drama that moves along very nicely. Russell’s voice is a combination of Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) and Mick Jagger that carries a lot of emotion: sorrow, love, hate, jubilation and delinquency. The track Heartbreaker showcases his vocal talent to the full. The lyrics are simple, expressing bits and pieces of the big picture that we can all relate to. Other great tracks include Call It Rock n Roll brain-stomping rock at its best with the grating guitar stamping its authority on the song and the drumming keeping it all together, and South Bay Cities which builds on great harmonies and backwater blues guitar. Great Whites captivating simplicity is most impressive. All fans of heavy metal and hard rock will love this album.
Hooked, was more of the somewhat timeless blues rock that had separated them from most of the hair metal crowd. The record’s cover, which featured a naked model being lowered into the sea on a giant fishing hook, was a mis-step that made them appear more out of sync with the times than they actually were. “You were looking at a smouldering crater where our music used to be,” says Jack Russell. “I was looking into it going, ‘what happened to our music?’
