Schon & Hammer Here To Stay LP CBS 25229

Here To Stay is the second album by the duo of keyboardist Jan Hammer guitarist Neal Schon. Schon is the guitarist for Journey and Hammer is best known for his soundtrack work on the Miami Vice TV series. Jan was also one of the leading figures in fusion jazz, being one of the original members of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. This album also features contributions from Schon’s band mates in Journey including song writing and background vocals from Steve Perry. The album cover is a play on the well-known Arm & Hammer brand baking soda. Here To Stay debuted on the Billboard Music Charts on 2/5/83 for 12 weeks and peaked at #122. This album is a must have!

Personnel:
Jan Hammer – drums, keyboards, percussion
Neal Schon – guitars, synthesizer, vocals
Glen Burtnik – vocals
Colin Hodgkinson – bass guitar
Steve Smith – drums
Ross Valory – bass guitar
Steve Perry – vocals on “”Self Defense””

Jan Hammer : “After the success of UNTOLD PASSION (Rolling Stone Europe’s “Album of the Year!”), Neal SchonColin Hodgkinson and I just had to get the band back together, and this time add Glen Burtnik as well as take it up a notch!  HERE TO STAY featured the MTV hit “No More Lies” which (by the way) Journey performed in concert every night with Neal stepping into Steve Perry‘s role and singing lead vocals. To top it off we filmed a great fun video for it in New Orleans, Louisiana!”

“Did you enjoy working with Neal Schon? Did those songs come easy for you guys? Some of that stuff sounds like a fun jam session that found its way on vinyl. I love that album!”

It WAS super intense, just Neal, Colin Hodgkinson, and me in my studio in the dead of winter. While Neal (the best #American guitarist) is deservedly celebrated for his cosmic lead playing, I often wonder how many people realize what an astounding rhythm #guitarist he is!

guitarist Neal Schon and keyboardist Jan Hammer united for a collaboration once again   1982 Here to Stay   barely a year after their debut appeared. Like the debut (1981 Untold Passion), the album is a combination of both player prog, fusion, and rock backgrounds   although a short song writing leash prevents most of the tracks from stretching past the four-minute mark. The duo were obviously aiming for the top of the charts with the album-opener (whose accompanying video was quite popular during the early days of MTV), “”No More Lies,”” which sounds like a song tailor-made for Pat Benatar. Elsewhere, Hammer gets to spread his wings on “”Time Again,”” while Schon shows off his hard rocking side with the Zeppelin-esque “”Turnaround.”” Like Untold Passion, Here to Stay was a moderate chart success. But despite its bold title, the album would prove to be the last Schon/Hammer collaboration.

5.0 out of 5 stars BE WARNED!
If one goes into this album thinking they’ll be getting
anything like the Jan Hammer Group jazz-funk material such as ‘Oh Yeah?”” and ‘Melodies”” YOU ARE IN THE WRONG PLACE!This album is a duet with Jan Hammer and Journey guitarist Neal Schon and HE steals the show, not Hammer! Schon biting guitar riffs permeate every song, even Steve Perry shows up to sing!Only Hammer lilting but so short “”Peace Of Mind”” reminds you he here. But his guitar like synthesizer licks do add color to these songs but the sound is 100% hard arena rock without one hint of the fusion sound of Jan Hammer. This marks the point when Hammer went totally rock n’ roll,so after a listen or two this is excellent rock music but terrible fusion! But how can a
music be something it isn’t anyway-that what art is all about anyway: the process, not the product.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Almost Schon Solo Project
I really enjoyed the heavy guitar-oriented sound that dominates almost every cut. It seems that Jan Hammer is just around to add color to Neil Schonâs guitar work, which may be one reason for the order of the names in the band title. That being said, I like this piece of music.

I found the songs far from generic and it still sounds pretty good. However, I strained to hear Hammer in there and outside of the occasional synth noodling, a few sequencer effects and some guitar-like synth solos that he is famous for, Schon is the dominator. There IS one heavy synth track near the end though.

Whatever the case, I like it. A great side project from these guys. Recommended.
