Description

RPLA: Very controversial band that graced the Kerrang! cover in ’93 when their album came out in EMI records! This album is really good in my opinion. It reminds me of the Cult, especially in the vocal department. Almost every song is a masterpiece in this Debut album from a band whose influences are the New York Dolls, Mott The Hoople, and The MC5 Their hard rock sound is lovingly culled from their esteemed forefathers There s a modern twist to the music but the vibes of twenty years ago are intact and in your face

RPLA sprang to fame when they starred on an unlikely front cover of the UK heavy metal bible Kerrang! magazine, who marketed them as a ‘Pretty Boy’ band similar to Poison and Mötley Crüe. Not long after this appearance they emerged with a different image and admitted that they were a ‘gay’ rock band. While this should have made no difference at all it knocked the macho metal press off its stride and suddenly the rave write-ups and gig reviews disappeared, with the band suffering as a result. They became the subject of a news item on UK television about sexism/homophobia in rock and Kerrang! were singled out. Within a few weeks a small piece on them became conspicuous by its appearance in said magazine. Whatever their press relationship was, the band did themselves no favours because the music content was never strong enough to overcome even the mildest prejudice.

sounded like The Cult (Electric era) pummelling their way through a cover of David Bowie’s Rebel Rebel and I loved it to bits. (Absolute Queen Of Pop is rumoured to be about Morrissey but this has never been confirmed.)

This album is tremendous fun { remember that? ] full of hook laden loud rock with succinct, humorous and memorable lines. “Last night a Drag Queen Saved My Life” should have been a big hit, but since the death of the charts a nation is robbed of a song that would liven up the corrupted airwaves. if I was asked for my advice I would suggest you buy this album and petition for any James Maker material to be speedily released or re-released. i pray every night that the latter might happen so much that I have house-maids knees, which utterly ruins the line of my spandex trousers. Release Maker!
