The Oberhausen extreme metallers PATH OF GOLCONDA blossomed into arguably one of the most promising bands in the German metal underground.
It is easy to recognize here that PATH OF GOLCONDA is already present in this work. In addition, the songs are really easy on the ear. The CD is essential for fans of intelligent Extreme Metal with influences from all kinds of death, thrash and black metal.

++ Verglichen mit dem beiden aktuelleren Werken hinkt Demonheart vor allem soundtechnisch doch hinterher. Jedoch erkennt man hier nach mehrmaligen Hören, welches Potential in PATH OF GOLCONDA schon bei diesen Werk steckte.
Admittedly, most record companies are not really on a financial high at the moment, but it is somehow difficult for me to understand the politics of most labels: Those responsible have been relying on a quantitative band offer for years and really pull every half-smelling fish ashore but still that the sales figures are on a continuous downward trend. But what can a real music lover, to whom a good album is worth in principle every euro, no matter how hard it deserves, do with a CD shelf full of soulless and uninspired average bands, while the high-caliber musicians are often left out due to the low risk appetite of the record industry?
The problem described is particularly vivid with a band like PATH OF GOLCONDA, which, with Destination: Downfall, has released its third and again convincing demo, but still has no prospect of an adequate record deal. While the predecessor Demonheart was already a hopeful and compositionally sophisticated sound carrier, in 2004 the five musicians finally managed to eliminate the Oberhausener’s only shortcoming with the weakening sound. Last but not least, the well-known producer Andy Classen, who has already worked for established acts (including TANKARD , GRAVEWORM or CALLENISH CIRCLE) was at the controls, responsible – the group seems to really want to know about this output, which is the band’s first full-length album, because the musicians will not only have such a collaboration financed by a monthly salary . The investment was clearly worth it, at least the sound of Destination: Downfall has become really stunning and you never have the feeling that this could even be a demo CD in the most distant sense.
There is also a lot to offer the listener musically: The dark depressive intro gives first impressions of the subject of the apocalypse, which is dealt with on the whole album, before being replaced by an overwhelming reef monster with Uncreation. The extremely brutal, but still very transparent production is immediately confirmed and after a few seconds any doubts about the technical brilliance disappear and the multiple musical influences of PATH OF GOLCONDA captivate. Bonds from various sectors shimmer through here: While the band mainly rummages in the Death and Black Metal boxes, here and there more modern styles are also paid tribute. It is therefore no surprise that Message In A Rifle MACHINE HEAD wake up, but without the music losing its identity. Although one can cobble together quite complex and sometimes very long songs from these diverse elements, the absolutely catchy choruses always guarantee the traceability of the individual pieces. However, the combo proves that you can’t just step on the accelerator pedal, but that you can also hit moderate tones, with an authentically staged end of the world (This Dead-End World) and the progressive mid-tempo song Petriachor, which in terms of composition and depth is probably the absolute Album highlight. The bonus track Devour Machine was already heard on the previous album and reveals the relevant improvement of this group in its new sound.
With Destination: Downfall, PATH OF GOLCONDA have once again outdone themselves, leaving the competition, and in some cases even some of the scene pioneers, clearly out in the rain. A musically excellent three-quarters of an hour, which is peppered with tips, the convincing production and an artistically designed booklet make the chapel one of the most promising combos of the next few years. What remains is really just a lack of understanding, because the superiority of these musicians over other bands without a deal is almost scary and therefore you can only keep your fingers crossed that the formation can finally win the long-awaited record contract. Zugegeben, die meisten Plattenfirmen befinden sich momentan wirklich nicht auf einem finanziellen Höhenflug, trotzdem kann ich die Politik der meisten Labels irgendwie schwer nachvollziehen: Da setzen die Verantwortlichen schon seit Jahren auf ein quantitatives Bandangebot und ziehen wirklich jeden halbwegs angenehm riechenden Fisch ans Land, wundern sich aber immernoch, dass sich die Verkaufszahlen auf einem kontinuierlichen Abwärtstrend befinden. Was aber kann ein echter Musikliebhaber, dem ein gutes Album prinzipiell jeden noch so schwer verdienten Euro wert ist, mit einem CD-Regal voller seelen- und ideenlosen Durchschnittsbands anfangen, während die echten Hochkaräter aufgrund der niedrigen Risikobereitschaft der Plattenindustrie oft außen vor gelassen werden?
Besonders anschaulich wird die beschriebene Problematik bei einer Band wie PATH OF GOLCONDA, die mit Destination: Downfall ihr mittlerweile drittes und erneut überzeugendes Demo an den Mann bringt, allerdings weiterhin keinen adäquaten Plattenvertrag in Aussicht hat. War schon der Vorgänger Demonheart ein hoffnungsvoller und kompositorisch ausgefeilter Tonträger, so schaffen es die fünf Musiker anno 2004 endlich auch, das mit dem schwächelnden Sound bislang einzige Manko der Oberhausener zu beseitigen. Nicht zuletzt macht sich hierfür der hinlänglich bekannte Produzent Andy Classen, der ja schon für etablierte Acts (u.a. TANKARD, GRAVEWORM oder CALLENISH CIRCLE) an den Reglern stand, verantwortlich – die Truppe scheint es mit diesem Output, welcher übrigens das erste Full-Length-Album der Band ist, also wirklich wissen zu wollen, denn eine solche Zusammenarbeit werden die Musiker wohl nicht nur von einem Monatsgehalt finanziert haben. Die Investition hat sich aber eindeutig gelohnt, zumindest ist der Sound auf Destination: Downfall wirklich umwerfend geworden und man hat zu keiner Sekunde das Gefühl, dass es sich hierbei auch nur im entferntesten Sinne um eine Demo-CD handeln könnte.
Auch musikalisch wird dem Hörer hier wieder einiges geboten: Das düster-depressive Intro gewährt erste Eindrücke über der Thematik der Apokalypse, mit der sich auf dem ganzen Album auseinandergesetzt wird, um anschließend mit Uncreation von einem unbändigen Riffmonster der Extraklasse abgelöst zu werden. Sofort bestätigt sich die äußerst brachiale, trotzdem aber sehr transparente Produktion und bereits nach wenigen Sekunden schwinden jegliche Zweifel über die technische Brillianz und es bestechen die vielfachen musikalischen Einflüsse von PATH OF GOLCONDA. Hier schimmern Anleihen aus verschiedensten Sparten hindurch: Während die Band hauptsächlich in der Death- und Blackmetal-Kiste kramt, wird auch hier und da moderneren Stilistiken Tribut gezollt. Deshalb ist es auch keine Überraschung, dass bei Message In A Rifle (!) vereinzelte Erinnerungen an die Ami-Thrasher MACHINE HEAD wach werden, allerdings ohne dass die Musik an ihrer Identität verliert. Obwohl man aus diesen vielfältigen Elementen ziemlich vertracktes und teilweise auch überlanges Liedgut schustert, garantieren die absolut eingängigen Refrains stets die Nachvollziehbarkeit der einzelnen Stücke. Dass man allerdings nicht ausschließlich auf das Gaspedal tritt, sondern durchaus auch gemäßigte Töne einschlagen kann, beweist die Combo mit einem authentisch inszenierten Weltuntergang (This Dead-End World) und dem progressiven Midtempo-Song Petriachor, welches in puncto Komposition und Tiefe wohl als absolutes Albumhighlight zu verzeichnen ist. Der Bonustrack Devour Machine war übrigens schon auf dem Vorgängeralbum zu hören und offenbart in seinem neuen Soundgewand die einschlägige Verbesserung dieser Truppe.
PATH OF GOLCONDA haben sich also mit Destination: Downfall wieder selbst übertreffen können und lassen die Konkurrenz, teilweise sogar so manchen Szenevorreiter ganz klar im Regen stehen. Eine musikalisch hervorragende Dreiviertelstunde, die ausschließlich mit Anspieltipps gespickt ist, die überzeugende Produktion und ein kunstvoll gestaltetes Booklet machen die Kapelle zu einer der vielversprechendsten Combos der nächsten Jahre. Was bleibt ist eigentich nur noch regelrechtes Unverständnis, denn die Überlegenheit dieser Musiker gegenüber anderen Bands ohne Deal ist fast schon unheimlich und daher kann man eigentlich nur die Daumen drücken, dass die Formation endlich den langersehnten Plattenvertrag einheimsen kann. Greift also zu und bestellt euch diesen ausgezeichneten Tonträger auf der offiziellen Bandhompage für gerade einmal zehn Euro, zumal dieser Silberling irgendwann einmal viel Bares wert sein wird!

A de luxe press with an attractive booklet, concept story and official production by Andy Classen. The sound pops accordingly fat. The songs impress across the board, with the Oberhausen folk presenting themselves more openly than ever. Already the violent opener ´Uncreation´ reinforces the black metallic basic structure with full thrash riffing, hardcore rhythmic rhythm work and a decent lead lead edge. The other six, apart from a shorter instrumental, consistently overly long songs, do not stick to a single style. The different parts were so cleverly interlinked that numbers like the groovy ´Message In A Rifle´, the death metal-heavy ´A Cannibal Crusade´ or the one reminiscent of Amon Amarth.
Eine Eigenpressung de Luxe mit ansprechendem Booklet, Konzeptstory und amtlicher Produktion von Andy Classen. Der Sound knallt entsprechend fett, wenn auch teils etwas zu undifferenziert aus den Boxen. Die Songs überzeugen durch die Bank, wobei sich die Oberhausener stilistisch offener denn je präsentieren. Schon der heftige Opener ´Uncreation´ verstärkt das schwarzmetallische Grundgerüst mit sattem Thrash-Riffing, Hardcore-mäßiger Rhythmusarbeit und einer ordentlichen Todesblei-Kante. Auch die übrigen sechs, abgesehen von einem kürzeren Instrumental durchweg überlangen Songs kleben nicht an einem einzigen Stil. Wobei die unterschiedlichen Parts derart geschickt miteinander verzahnt wurden, dass Nummern wie das groovige ´Message In A Rifle´, das Death-Metal-lastige ´A Cannibal Crusade´ oder der an Amon Amarth erinnernde, vom letzten Demo bekannte Bonustrack ´Devour Machine´ durchaus das Prädikat Ohrwurm verdienen.
