Survivor – Eye Of The Tiger | The story behind the song

5.0 out of 5 stars The 80’s never died,
If you yearn for the great music of the 80’s, especially arena pop/rock, this CD is a must own. This is a mostly live CD featuring some of the pop/rock icons of the 80’s and early 90’s. 10 live tracks -Plus- 5 bonus studio tracks. Jim Peterik (best known as a front man for the band ‘Survivor’, leads the festivities on this CD, performing with and sharing the lead vocals with 3 lead singers of 80’s bands including, KEVIN CRONIN(REO SPEEDWAGON), DON BARNES(38 SPECIAL), AND KELLY KEAGY (NIGHT RANGER). Sister Christian is a standout, and Peterik’s take on “Vehicle”(Ides of March), is amazing. Peterik also sings lead on “Eye of the Tiger”, and allows Kevin Chalfant(The Storm) to lead vocalise on another “Survivor’ classic “I Can’t Hold Back”. The 5 bonus studio tracks are catchy pop/rock. and the track ‘The Day America Died’ from Johnny Van Zant(lynyrd Skynyrd) should be a staple on all FM radio stations as a true tribute to 9/11.

Jim Peterik took his project WORLD STAGE and made a live spectacle out of it, and “Rock America” is the result. Jim is known for his work with Survivor and as a songwriter for several other AOR artists, but as if that wasn’t enough, he invited some of his collaborators to the stage to perform their own hits too.

The album opens with probably THE most well-known song written by Jim Peterik, “Eye Of The Tiger”. Jim shares the lead vocal duties with one Jeff Boyle. The version is quite good – different enough to be refreshing compared to the somewhat overplayed original. “Hold On Loosely” is a song Peterik wrote for 38 Special, and naturally the lead vocals are shared with the original singer of the track, Don Barnes. The version isn’t too convincing though, those high notes seem to be a bit hard to reach. Then one of the special quests gets to shine – Nightranger Kelly Keagy sings their own hit “Sister Christian”.

The next two songs are quite interesting. They’re both old Survivor hits, “I Can’t Hold Back” is sung by Kevin Chalfant (The Storm, The VU, Two Fires) and he does a great job with it, while “The Search Is Over” is turned into a piano-driven duet, featuring two local singers, Kelly Moulik and Brian Anders. Interesting and quite good, although a bit on the soft side for the more hard rock-oriented readers of ours.

The blues rock of “Vehicle” doesn’t do much for me, but both “I’ve Got A Lot To Learn About Love” and “Between Two Fires” are prime time AOR. The first one is of course The Storm hit sung by Kevin Chalfant & Peterik, while the latter features REO Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin sharing the vocals with Peterik. Kelly Keagy helps out with “Heavy Metal”, a song from the movie by the same name, while Don Barnes shares the vox on 38 Special’s “Rockin’ Into The Night”. I’m not particulary fond of either of the tracks, it seems like they haven’t really aged too well.

In addition to the ten live tracks, there’s five bonustracks, 3 from the original World Stage release and two newer songs. The WS tracks “Can’t Say It Loud Enough”, “Changed By Love” and “Long Road Home” are quite balladic ones, my favourite being the Keagy/Peterik collaboration “Long Road Home”. The new songs are “Sum Of Our Hearts”, a nice ballad written in the memory of a three-year old boy, who recently lost the battle against cancer, and “The Day America Cried”, another touching song written about the events of September 11. This song is something really special, loaded with emotion and intense vocals from Peterik and Johnny Van Zant. Simply a great song.

“Rock America” is a decent selection of songs, and I can recommend it to anyone into Peterik’s song writing. It may not rank as a classic release, but I don’t think that any AOR fan would be totally disappointed. The cover might make you think of a bargain bin tribute album, but music is in a different league.

The title track of Survivor’s third album became the biggest hit song of 1982. Eye Of The Tiger topped the US singles chart for seven straight weeks, and brought the melodic hard rock band from Chicago a Grammy and an Oscar nomination. Survivor’s creative linchpins were guitarists/composers/producers Frankie Sullivan and Jim Peterik, but it was Sylvester Stallone who made Survivor stars. Impressed by the band’s first couple of hits, the movie star/director sounded out his friend, Scotti Bros label boss Tony Scotti, to see if Survivor would help with the soundtrack to the upcoming Rocky III.

Peterik is no longer with Survivor, but he recalls how Stallone left the pair identical answerphone messages (“Yo, Jim. This is Sylvester Stallone. Gimme a call. We need to talk”) to begin the collaboration. Sullivan, however, begs to differ.

“I love Jim, but he embellishes things a little,” he chuckles. “Sly had liked Poor Man’s Son [the band’s first Top 40 hit, from 1981’s Premonition], but it was Tony [Scotti] that played cupid between Stallone and us.”

They both agree, though, that Stallone insisted the song had “a pulse” to accompany boxing glove-clad fists being slammed into bruised eye sockets. The song’s punchy, staccato riff was perfect.

“Stallone sent the first 10 minutes of the film for us to watch, and I was so upset when it cut out,” he laughs. “So I told him I needed to see the rest of the movie to do it justice. It was totally untrue, I just wanted to know how it ended.”

In fact, although Sullivan and Peterik offered a ballad called Ever Since The World Began that they thought would be used instead, Survivor broke through with a tough-coated anthemic rocker.

“We’d recorded Eye Of The Tiger as a demo on February 1, 1982, and that’s the version used in the film,” Frankie recalls precisely. “Sly liked it so much he didn’t wait around for us to re-cut it, though the version on our record was done in a professional studio.”

In fact, on the VHS cassette of the film that Stallone sent Sullivan and Peterik, Queen’s Another One Bites The Dust is in the place where Eye Of The Tiger ended up.

“That’s right,” Frankie confirms. “When one of my idols, Brian May, attended one of our shows in Los Angeles in 1984, he brought up that subject. I offered to send him a copy of the tape, which I still own.”

Eye Of The Tiger was released as a single three weeks after Rocky IIIhit the screens. The song’s long stint at the top of the chart was almost like winning the lottery for the group, especially for Sullivan, who unlike his partners had been struggling to make ends meet.

“My bandmates were making six figures a year on sessions and commercials,” he says. “I couldn’t read music and didn’t know what a jingle was, but I did know that those guys all had nice cars and houses, whereas I could barely afford my $200-per-month apartment.”

Asked if the overnight success went to anyone in Survivor’s head, he laughs: “Of course. But I won’t tell you who. Going to the Golden Globes and winning Grammys at 24 years old, you have to pinch yourself.”

After a 13-month tour and just one more album, 1983’s Caught In The Game, beret-wearing frontman Dave Bickler’s worsening voice problems caused him to leave the band, to be replaced by Jimi Jamison.

“Playing five nights a week took its toll on Dave,” Sullivan says. “I think he knew he was done with Survivor when we made Caught In The Game.”

Sullivan acknowledges that everything the band have done since – including the theme tune to Rocky 4Burning Heart – will forever be in the shadow of their biggest and best hit. But he insists he’s comfortable with that.

“Trying to compete with the past is for fools. But I’ll never, ever tire of playing Eye Of The Tiger. That song still kicks butt, man”.
