Drive, She Said ドライヴ・シー・セッド is the partnership of Mark and Al Fritsch. Signed to Columbia Records, the group recorded it first record which spawned the singles “”If This Is Love”” and “”Love Has No Pride”” (written with Aldo Nova).
The 1989 self-titled debut from Drive, She Said is about as good a recap of the whole 80’s AOR scene as any album can be. Featuring (among others) Mark Mangold (Touch) and Bob Kulick (Balance), Drive, She Said unapologetically waded into pure AOR territory at a time when that sound was being overshadowed by Hollywood hair metal bands.
This is a fun, albeit very lite AOR album along the lines of REO Speedwagon, Journey, Toto, and lighter Bon Jovi. The calibre of musicians guarantees a high quality level. You could probably substitute 90% of all 80 movie soundtracks with this album and no one would know the difference. It is just so quintessentially 80, what with its 50/50 split between love anthems and love ballads.

Drive, She Said released their debut album in 1988 and sadly it was largely ignored in their US homeland. The band consisting of Al Fritsch and Mark Mangold handled the majority of the instruments on the disc (Fritsch playing a little keys, nearly all the guitars and singing, while Mangold handled the majority of the keyboards, sang backup vocals and some of the drums), however the album was also notable for some guest appearances from Bob Kulick, Tony Bruno and Kenny Arononoff. The likes of “Don’t You Know”, “If This Is Love” and “Hold On (Hands Around Your Heart)”, are all stellar examples of keyboard heavy AOR, that ranges from tender ballads to up tempo soft rock. Fritsch has a gravely yet gloriously melodic voice and considering Mangold is no slouch himself behind the mic, the harmonies are lush and full. Surprisingly considering how light weight some of this material is, the guitars really do make a telling contribution, although there’s no doubt that they do take a back seat on many occasions.

Mark Mangold is not a stranger for aor-fans. This album & the second one are two aor-jewels. Al Fritsch delivers a great vocal effort. Highly Recommended.

Just got this album…Wow! This is top notch…Never heard this band before….Very polished but with balls. Great outstanding songs. “Hard Way Home” really got my adrenaline pumpin’….Highly recommended for lovers of quality AOR…

Every track on this album was taken straight off the cutting room floor from Mangold’s previous band TOUCH. Having said that, I particularly enjoy this release!
The lush ‘As She Touches Me (Why Can’t I Believe)’ coupled with the ‘Twitch’ era sounding ‘Love Has No Pride’, a song co-penned and co-produced by Aldo Nova. ‘If This Is Love’ is their trademark song, AOR of the purest kind. The Fiona co-write ‘Hard Way Home’ is straight ahead melodic rock with an organ base, while the Touch chestnut ‘Don’t You Know What Love Is’ gets a make-over. AOR of the purest form. Excellent stuff.
Listened to this today and was still blown away by how superb this album is. Still sounds fresh and puts new releases to shame
Just dusted this gem off again…MAAAAANNNN!!! It’s awesome…It stays on my all time top 10 for another year I’m sure… It doesn’t really get any better…
Fritsch & Mangold know AOR & they play it really well. Songs like If This Is Love, Hard Way Home & Love Has No Pride carry this album.
Timeless- a must own piece in the collection of any serious AOR fan…the best work Mangold has appeared on other than Michael Bolton’s ‘Everybody’s Crazy’ album. 10/10
one of my favourite albums of ’89 and any other year for that matter. Most peoples comments above sum this one up nicely. After the ‘Classic’ Touch album, without a doubt Mark Mangold’s finest hour. One AOR album that is full to the brim of great songs – with no filler to be seen. One deserving the ‘Classic’ tag in my books and an album they unfortunately never bettered in future releases.

AOR 80`s avasallador!!Esta banda tiene claras influencias de aor melodico USA predomina la voz rockera de Al Fritsch los guitarrazos no tan pretenciosos y claro los magicos teclados que hacen de cada cancion melodias para recordar…. solo escuchen: If This Is Love,Hard Way Home,Don’t You Know,Love Has No Pride,Hold On,If I Told You,I Close My Eyes,y el increible punto final: As She Touches Me…casi el 100% de los temas realmente bien trabajados, si aun no lo tienes que esperas? 9/10
Perfect vocals, awesome chorus, great melodies. A lot of guitars and nice keyboards. Hard to tell which track’s the best. A killer, a monster and absolute Mercedes Benz in AOR category.

Very good AOR one. Smooth and laid back but still with a lot of power. Imagine the best parts of STRANGEWAYS, BOULEVARD & RED DAWN, DARE with ONLY CHILD and you should have it! Even WEST OF SUNSET and FINGERPRINTS I hear. Highly recommended as it has a lot of keys, but guitars and groove too, added with a genre alike perfect fitting voice. My favourites here (so far ) are the pumping “HARD WAY HOME”, “I CLOSE MY EYES” or the ballad “BUT FOR YOU” ..but very constant overall. 9,7/10
Mr Mangold was, is and will be a music genius.. This album contains a remake of Don’t you know what love is from the Touch album 1980….Really outstanding! 92/100

Going through my collection from A to Z and forgot I had this one. Just finished playing it and probably will play it again. Two great musicians doing what they do best. If you are into top-notch melodic rock/AOR then this will light your fire. BUY!
superb debut by DRIVE SHE SAID with Mark Mangold fit perfectly with Al Fritch! the songs are of the highest quality ,the musicianship very fine and the whole result could be better it was more guitar driven !anyway “if this is love”, ‘hard way home”, “don’t you know”, “love has no pride” and “maybe it s love” are sensational songs! πέφτει στα χέρια μου ένας δίσκος που έχει ως εξώφυλλο ένα τιμόνι (;;;) πάνω από έναν αυτοκινητόδρομο! Όχι και τόσο δυνατή πρώτη εντύπωση. Γυρίζοντας όμως στο οπισθόφυλλο βλέπω δύο τύπους με μακριά μαλλιά (φυσικά!), με φανελάκια και με τζινς να κάθονται ακουμπισμένοι σε ένα κόκκινο υπέρ αμάξι. Testarossa ίσως;;;; Το σίγουρο πάντως είναι ότι υπέθεσα πως ήταν “δικά μας παιδιά” και η επαλήθευση έγινε λίγο αργότερα με τα τραγούδια που η βελόνα του πικάπ άρχισε να απελευθερώνει σιγά σιγά. Τα “δικά μας παιδιά” ήταν οι κύριοι Mark Mangold και Al Fritsch, με το project τους Drive she said και τα αριστουργηματικά τραγούδια που μου φανερώθηκαν για πρώτη φορά ήταν μέσα από τον ομότιτλο πρώτο τους δίσκο, κάπου πίσω στο 1989.
Η ΣΥΝΑΝΤΗΣΗ
Ο μύθος λέει πως το 1989 ο Mark Mangold, πληκτράς και συνθέτης, ήταν ένας μουσικός που το πλούσιο βιογραφικό του με συνεργασίες όπως Michael Bolton, Cher κ. α. τον έκαναν αυτομάτως “στόχο” για πολλούς που ήθελαν να κτίσουν την καριέρα τους. Ο Fran Cosmo, σύνδεσμος με το συγκρότημα Κολοσσό του A. O. R., τους Boston, δούλευε μαζί με τον Mangold εκείνη την περίοδο πάνω σε τραγούδια για ένα επερχόμενο project των δυο τους. Κατά την διάρκεια λοιπόν αυτής της συνεργασίας, ο Al Fritsch θα τραβήξει την προσοχή του Mangold εξαιτίας των φωνητικών του αρετών αλλά και της μουσικής του πολυμορφίας (έπαιζε και ηλεκτρική κιθάρα) κάνοντάς τον να βάλει στον πάγο τα όποια σχέδια με τον Fran Cosmo και να προχωρήσει με τον Fritsch σε αυτό που έγινε γνωστό ως Drive she said. Οι Drive she said υπέγραψαν στην CBS το 1988, δύο χρόνια μετά τον σχηματισμό τους. Η μεγάλη φήμη στους μουσικούς κύκλους των δύο αυτών προσωπικοτήτων μαγνήτισε και μεγάλα ονόματα που πρόσθεσαν λίγη από την μαγεία τους στην φιλόδοξη προσπάθεια. Έτσι λοιπόν μέσα στα δέκα τραγούδια του δίσκου γευόμαστε τις μελωδικές κιθάρες των Tony Bruno (Saraya), Bob Kulick (Meat Loaf, Balance), Rick Derringer (Dust), το μπάσο ακριβείας του Kenny Aaronson (HSAS), την ακουστική από τα “δέρματα” του Kenny Aaronoff καθώς και τις φωνητικές πινελιές σε δεύτερο πάντα ρόλο, του τεράστιου Benny Mardones. Φιλικές συνθετικές συμμετοχές κάνουν ο Aldo Nova στο τραγούδι Love has no pride και η κουκλάρα Fiona Flanagan στο Hard way home. Ας περάσουμε όμως στο κυρίως πιάτο που δεν είναι άλλο από τα τραγούδια.
Έρωτας, έρωτας, έρωτας! Κάποιες φορές ο έρωτας γίνεται δηλητηριασμένο βέλος που σε τρυπάει και που αρρωσταίνει την ψυχή σου. Ακόμα και έτσι όμως…… Αξίζει!! Ο μαέστρος Mark Mangold δημιουργεί το κλίμα με τα πλήκτρα του και ο Al Fritsch “τελικιάζει” το συναίσθημα με την ερμηνεία του στο σπαρακτικό If this is love.
Δυνατή, γκρουβάτη ροκιά για την συνέχεια. Hard way home, με την Fiona σε υποστηρικτικό δεύτερο φωνητικό ρόλο και σε πρωταγωνιστικό συνθετικό. Ένα τραγούδι που μπορεί να λειτουργήσει και ως ο ορισμός του ανεβαστικού μελωδικού ροκ!
Ο φόρος τιμής στις παλιές μέρες, δηλαδή στο παλιό συγκρότημα του Mangold τους Touch έρχεται αμέσως μετά, με την αναβίωση και το lifting για να χωρέσει στο κλίμα της εποχής, στην τραγουδάρα Don’t you know. Πολλά χρόνια αργότερα οι Σουηδοί Houston, θα το διασκευάσουν στο άλμπουμ “Relaunch”. Το σίγουρο είναι πως όποια εκδοχή επιλέξετε να ακούσετε δεν θα απογοητευτείτε. Το But for you έχει “Survivor DNA” μέσα του, με στίχους και με έντονα πλήκτρα που φέρνουν στον νου τον τεράστιο Jim Peterik!
Ο Καναδός Aldo Nova είναι αγαπημένος cult καλλιτέχνης που άφησε και αυτός το στίγμα του στο μελωδικό ροκ του ογδόντα. Το Love has no pride είναι ένα αργό παθιασμένο τραγούδι, χαρακτηρισμός που αποδίδεται λόγω της ερμηνείας του Al Fritsch, που θεωρώ πως έχει βγει καρφί από τον δίσκο “Twitch” (δισκάρα!!!) του ιδίου.

Τι να λέμε τώρα, ύμνος!!!! Ένταση στο τέρμα, μάτια καρφωμένα στο υπερπέραν, ανατριχίλα και ναι!….. Αυτό λέγεται μελωδικό παραλήρημα!
Μετά την έκρηξη αδρεναλίνης, τα πράγματα δεν θα ηρεμήσουν ακριβώς. Ακολουθεί το Hold on (Hands around your heart) που πατάει πάνω στους μέγιστους Journey, με μια απίστευτη ρεφρενάρα που στο τέλος θα βρεθείτε να την τραγουδάτε μαζί με τον Al Fritsch σαν να μην υπάρχει αύριο.
Τώρα εγώ φταίω που όταν ακούω το If I told you το μυαλό μου πάει στην θρυλική σειρά Miami Vice; Μάλλον φταίει η μεγάλη μου αγάπη για την δεκαετία του ογδόντα.
Φιλική συμβουλή, απολαύστε το με δύο προϋποθέσεις: Την νύχτα και τον δρόμο!

Για φινάλε, ακόμα ένα εξαιρετικό συναισθηματικό τραγούδι. Το As she touches me (Why can’t I believe) είναι μια ημι – μπαλάντα με ένα χορωδιακό ρεφρέν που τελειώνοντας κατορθώνει να ενισχύσει την σχέση εξάρτησης που δημιουργήθηκε καθόλη την ακρόαση του δίσκου, αναγκάζοντας σε για ακόμα ένα άκουσμα.
Καθαρό Αμερικάνικο A. O. R.! Τίτλος που δεν χρειάζεται αλλά συνοδευτικά δίπλα του. Ο Al Fritsch στις 10 Οκτωβρίου 2017 θα κόψει το νήμα με την ζωή.
