Cruiserweight, a band based out of Austin, Texas, has been generating buzz and fans by the boatload as they rock their way through the Southwestern, Southeastern, and Northeastern parts of the United States. Cruiserweight’s sound, often described as pop-punk or emo, manages to transcend either label due, in large part, to the vocal stylings of Stella Maxwell, the vivacious frontwoman for the band. Stella is joined by her brothers Urny and Yogi, who play lead guitar and drums, respectively. Close friend, Dave Hawkins, plays bass guitar.
I love Cruiserweight – you will too!
I first discovered Cruiserweight in Austin in October of 2002. I have been a huge fan ever since. While I like a variety of different musical genres, CW’s style (which I’m sure I will define incorrectly as Pop Punk) is not one I normally gravitate to. But Stella and the boys are unbelievable. Hard driving guitar from Urny, amazing drums from Yogi, bass lines from Dave and impact vocals/storytelling from Stella combine to create an infectious sound. Everyone that I have shared Cruiserweight with have become huge fans.
Yellow Light is my favorite, but it’s kinda like saying who is your favorite kid – all the songs are great. I’m Back, Cautionary Tale, Elephant, all great. Littered with metaphors, CW’s lyrics run hard and fast and are not the normal fodder you find from most band’s debut album. Take my advise – get this album!
