Description
CIRCUS OF POWER: Emerging from the gutter of New York late 80s Lower East Side, this heavily tattooed quartet delivered a unique and uncompromising brand of blues-based heavy metal. Alex Mitchell paint-stripping vocals coupled with Ricky Beck-Mahler grungy guitar riffs were the band trademarks, while Gary Sunshine (bass) and Ryan Maher (drums) provided the necessary ammunition in the rhythm section. Distilling influences such as the Dictators, AC/DC, Motorhead and white blues guitarists including Johny Winter and Rick Derringer, they purveyed solid, raunchy rock ‘n’ roll, underpinned by a keen sense of melody and dynamics. The lyrical subject matter concerned itself with ‘wrong side of the street’ narratives, reflecting their origins in the drug-infested Alphabet City community they call home. With three albums for RCA Records behind them and a successful support slot on Black Sabbath 1990 tour, they remained relatively unknown outside their native New York. RCA consequently dropped the group, which may have been a rash decision, particularly in the light of Columbia Records’ decision to step in with a contract.
