By 1981 three quarters of Whitesnake’s material was emanating from guitarist Bernie Marsden, and in the same year he finally managed to find time to record a second solo album. The first, ‘And About Time Too’.

Aside from Bernie on guitar and vocals, fellow snakes Ian Paice, Neil Murray and Jon Lord were the backbone of the band for the sessions, with Simon Phillips depping as the second drummer. (Bernie also persuaded Michael Schenker to come in and supply hand-claps to the end of one song!)

There were plans for some live shows but Whitesnake were so busy these couldn’t be sorted out. Bernie did manage to get the musicians together again in August 1981 for a BBC radio session, which remains the only contemporary live outing for any of this material. Performing four songs from the album, the session was made even more interesting when David Coverdale turned up to sing one song.

So here is the song from the BBC radio session:

good taste, melodic solo, great riff, nice? voice, beautiful solo = BERNIE MARSDEN

BERNIE MARSDEN – “Look At Me Now”
(EMI, 1981)
Great Britain 1979 – 1982 (solo)
As you know Bernie Marsden was a BABE RUTH, UFO and WHITESNAKE band member. When he decided to come up with his own material for the first time, he was still at the stage where he (along with Coverdale and Mick Moody) was working on composing “Fool For Your Loving”. So between “Love Hunter”, “Ready An’ Willing” and “Live… In The Heart Of The City” he finds the time to record his own ideas. There will be two remarkable albums (“And About Time Too”, Sunburst, 1979 and “Look At Me Now”, Sunburst, 1981), in which all his old friends participate: Ian Paice, Simon Phillips, Jack Bruce, Cozy Powell, Don Airey and Neil Murray. They came up with seven tracks for the second album. The title track is a melodic heavy rock song with AOR origins and clever instrumentation and lyrics. Marsden himself pulls it off just fine and even more so in the lyrics. “Always Love You So”, as you might have guessed from its title, is not as dynamic as “Look At Me Now”. Have to say that the female vocals at the end of the track, add some class to the song. In general, what the guitarist in question did in that period, on the turn of the decade, borrows from both the ’70s and the ’80s and gives old-timers like me, moments of great happiness. A little later Marsden will form S.O.S., which will then be renamed to ALASKA.
