Whitesnake is the seventh studio album by British hard rock band of the same name, released in 1987. The album aimed for more of a heavy metal sound than the previous ones. The album was a major crossover hit eventually selling over eight million copies in the United States alone (and thus going eight times platinum). The album peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart. Its success even boosted its predecessor, Slide It In, from gold to double platinum status.

Personnel changes prior to the writing:
During the supporting tour for the bands previous album, Slide It In, singer David Coverdale and drummer Cozy Powells relationship had started to strain. In 1985, after the bands performance at the Rock In Rio festival in Brazil (the last show of the Slide It In-tour), Powell left the group. Prior to his leaving, Coverdale was actually about to fold the band, but executives at Geffen Records (with whom Whitesnake had recently signed with in the US only, outside the US they remained with EMI) asked Coverdale to continue working with guitarist John Sykes, as they saw potential in the two.
Early writing process:
In the spring of 1985, Coverdale and Sykes decamped to the town of Le Rayol in the south of France, to start writing material for a new album (according to Coverdale, bassist Neil Murray also helped with some of the arrangements). Two songs that would emerge from these sessions would be two of Whitesnakes biggest hits: “Still of the Night” (based on an old demo by Coverdale and Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore) and “Is This Love” (originally written for Tina Turner).

Rehearsing, recruiting a new drummer and early album development:
Coverdale, Sykes and Murray moved down to Los Angeles, where they rehearsed and started auditioning for drummers. Legend has it that the band auditioned 60 drummers before they found Aynsley Dunbar. With their lineup complete Whitesnake headed up to Vancouver, Canada, to lay plans for the new record. One of the first issues the band faced was John Sykes’ desire to get a specific guitar sound that he wanted, which he eventually got with the help of Coverdale’s friend, engineer Bob Rock (who had previously worked with Bon Jovi on the multi-platinum album Slippery When Wet).
Coverdales illness and return to the recording:
The next problem the band faced was a sinus infection with which Coverdale was stricken. This put the albums production behind schedule, especially when Coverdale underwent surgery and a six month long rehabilitation program. Sykes grew impatient and suggested bringing in a new vocalist and carrying on without Coverdale, which eventually led to the end of Coverdales relationship with both John Sykes and producer Mike Stone. After Coverdale recovered, he started work on his vocal tracks with Ron Nevison, before soon switching to Keith Olsen, who also helped mixing the album. Keyboard players Don Airey and Bill Cuomo were brought in to record some keyboard parts, as well as Dutch guitar player Adrian Vandenberg to record the guitar solo for the re-recorded version of the song “Here I Go Again”. Coverdale was also discussing the possibility of Vandenberg soon joining Whitesnake.
Band members fired, the albums release and new members:
By this time (late 1986), with the recording process done and the album slated to be released in early 1987, Coverdale made the decision to let the other members of the band go, due to personal differences. But when the album was finally released (now titled Whitesnake in the US) in April, 1987 it reached number 2 on Billboard Top 200 charts, spawning two hit singles: “Here I Go Again ’87” (which reached number 1 in the US) and “Is This Love” (which reached number 2 in the US).
In Europe the album was called 1987 which featured a different running order and two extra tracks, “Looking for Love” and “You’re Gonna Break My Heart Again”
For the new line-up of the band, Coverdale enlisted guitarist Adrian Vandenberg (with whom he had already discussed this), second guitarist Vivian Campbell (ex-Dio) and the rhythm section of the newly defuct M.A.R.S. project, bassist Rudy Sarzo (ex-Quiet Riot and Ozzy Osbourne) and drummer Tommy Aldridge (ex-Black Oak Arkansas, Pat Travers, Gary Moore and Ozzy Osbourne). This line-up toured in support of the album, and all appeared in music videos for “Still of the Night” (which was the most requested video on MTV when it was released), ‘”Is This Love”, “Here I Go Again” and “Give Me All Your Love”.
Ο David Coverdale, ήθελε με τον ένα ή τον άλλο τρόπο να κατακτήσει την Αμερικάνικη αγορά και σίγουρα η χρονική συγκυρία ευνοούσε τέτοια εγχειρήματα. Το heavy metal με την μια ή την άλλη μορφή του ήταν στο απόγειο της δόξας του και τα άλμπουμ του ιδιώματος χτυπούσαν κορυφαίες θέσεις στο Αμερικάνικο Billboard. Οι προηγούμενες απόπειρες με τα εξαιρετικά “Saints & Sinners” και “Slide it in” στην ουσία είχαν αποτύχει, αν και τα άλμπουμ, κατά την προσωπική μου άποψη, ήταν από καλλιτεχνικής απόψεως ότι καλύτερο είχαν προσφέρει οι WHITESNAKE. Στην προσπάθειά του αυτή, ο Coverdale, έκανε κάποια βασικά λάθη χειρισμού στο θέμα διαχείρισης του ανθρώπινου δυναμικού που είχε στην διάθεση του να πλαισιώσει το συγκρότημα. Ενώ οι βασικές συνθέσεις είχαν γραφτεί με τον Sykes, ξαφνικά ο Vandeberg μαζί με τον Vivian Campell εμφανίζονται στο προσκήνιο και ο Sykes εξαφανίζεται. Ο Cozy Powell φεύγει, ο Aynsley Dunbar γράφει τα drums, αλλά και αυτός ξαφνικά αγνοείται, το ίδιο συμβαίνει με τον Neil Murrey που από το πουθενά, στην θέση του έρχεται ο Rudy Sarzo! Με άλλα λόγια άλλοι έγραψαν και ηχογράφησαν και κατ’ ουσία άλλοι εμφανίστηκαν στα video clip και στην περιοδεία που ακολούθησε. Από την μουσική άποψη το άλμπουμ αποτέλεσε μια ηχητική έκρηξη hair metal τύπου, που κανείς μας δεν περίμενε να ακούσει από τους WHITESNAKE, ενταγμένο όμως πλήρως στο πνεύμα της εποχής (ακόμα και η ξανθιά αφάνα και οι πολύχρωμες …ρόμπες που φορούσε ο Coverdale, ήταν πρώτης τάξεως εκπλήξεις)! Φασιαρόζικος ήχος, επιτηδευμένο τσαμπουκαλέ ύφος, σεξιστικό στυλάκι, πιασάρικο metal, εκκωφαντικές κιθάρες, παραγωγή ογκώδης, ρυθμικές συνθέσεις στο έπακρο, που στην αρχή ναι μεν όλα αυτά ήταν εντυπωσιακά, αλλά μετά αναρωτιόσουν αν όντως αυτοί ήταν οι WHITESNAKE ή κάτι άλλο. Το “Still of the night” από την μια, ήταν μια προσφορά του Blackmore, ως προς το βασικό ριφ, από τα χρόνια των DEEP PURPLE, αλλά από την άλλη ήταν η ξεπατικοτούρα των LED ZEPPELIN. Το “Is this love”, μια σύνθεση αρχικά γραμμένη για την Tina Turner, θυμίζει ανυπόφορα FOREIGNER και να πω την αλήθεια ποτέ δε μου άρεσε. Το “Here I go again” αν και ξαναπαιγμένο, ήταν μια καλή επιλογή για την Αμερικάνικη αγορά και αποδείχτηκε πως τελικά ήταν αυτό που τους οδήγησε να ξεκλειδώσουν την πόρτα των επιτυχιών! Όπως πάντως και να έχουν τα πράγματα, τα τρία προαναφερθέντα τραγούδια, ήταν και οι μεγαλύτερες επιτυχίες των WHITESNAKE, τραγούδια που ακόμα και σήμερα θεωρούνται καλώς ή κακώς all time classics. Από εκεί και πέρα, έχουμε ακόμα μια διασκευή δικού τους τραγουδιού, την πολύ καλή επίσης επανεκτέλεση του “Crying in the rain”, τα εμφατικά “Children of the night”, “Give me all your love”, “Straight from the heart”, αλλά με τα υπόλοιπα να μην είναι στο ίδιο επίπεδο, ίσως με εξαίρεση το “You gonna break my heart again”. Γενικότερα, το “1987” έκανε τους WHITESNAKE super stars ανά τον κόσμο, όμως αυτή την επιτυχία και την αλλαγή ήχου (συν και άλλα..) τα επόμενα χρόνια θα τα πλήρωνε ακριβά ο κος Coverdale. Οι αιτίες λίγο πολύ είναι γνωστές, αλλά πιστεύω πως οι κύριες ήταν δυο. Πρώτον ο άκρατος, τότε, εγωισμός του και δεύτερον το ότι απευθύνθηκε, με μια απότομη αλλαγή ήχου, σε ένα κοινό που ναι μεν τον υποστήριξε, αλλά αυτή η υποστήριξη ήταν βραχυπρόθεσμη ενώ ταυτοχρόνως έχανε ένα πολύ μεγάλο μερίδιο της φυσικής βάσης οπαδών της η μπάντα. Εάν σήμερα με ρωτήσετε ποιο άλμπουμ των WHIETSNAKE προτιμώ, όσο και ένα με εντυπωσίασε όταν κυκλοφόρησε το “1987”, τόσο δεν το ακούω πια σήμερα και τελικά η ποιότητα του “Slide it in” πιστεύω πως άντεξε πολύ περισσότερο στον χρόνο.
