Well I must admit this band have really thrown me; pigeonholing them into a genre is proving to be particularly difficult and to confuse matters further, every time I listen to them I hear a plethora of bands they sound like, yet they manage to maintain a unique sound of their own. What I am sure of though is that this six-track demo is thoroughly enjoyable and impressively original. When first track,  Buckle Up Bitch  kicked in, I really was very bewildered at first. Usually when you hear a band for the first time, you can get a good idea of what they’re all about quite soon into the song but Godbotherer have managed to really challenge me in this respect. The beginning of the track had me thinking towards Entombed era Death, with the vocals having an early-Sentenced feel and at times bordering on Cathedralâs Lee Dorrian with his funky growl of “Letâs Go!â€. The riffs and over-all structure are very simplistic but very memorable, almost sludgy at times. Ok, so Iâm getting a feel of what this band are all about now, or am I? Just at the end of the track, I wondered what the fuck was going on when I heard the words, “Buckle Up Bitch†being cried out in full falsetto mode duetting with the more deathly growl I had just become used to. And you know what? It really worked! The only other band I know to use this style is Reverend Bizarre and I can imagine that this is a style that will catch on and be adopted a lot more. Now this band had already completely thrown me so I was trying to prepare myself for further tricks they may have up their sleeves but I wasnât prepared enough. The bass heavy intro of second track, “God Made My Medicine†reminded me of a mixture between Nirvana and The Breeders which is exactly why I could never call this band Death Metal and equally why they are so unique. You may think that from all these eclectic mixes of genres, that this band may sound messy or directionless, but far from it; they sound incredibly comfortable in their own sound. “God Made My Medicine†is an absolutely storming track, certainly my favourite one on the demo mainly due to the super-catchy yet unnervingly odd chorus as well as a funky solo to boot. Again, the falsetto vocals are utilised on this and indeed throughout this demo, which seems to be their trade-mark sound. (Note to self: it does not sound remotely cool to try and mimic this whilst listening to your Walkman at a crowded train station) The ensuing tracks are all equally as captivating with even more influences thrown in the mix- I could even hear Punk, Hardcore and Mathcore influences, and although Iâm not a fan of these genres, as Iâve said before, in this context it works really well. Fifth track, “1234†particularly interested me, partly due to the disjointed guitar sound but mainly due to the oddball lyrics…. Do you remember the nursery rhyme type song from Nightmare On Elm Street? “One two, Freddyâs coming for you. Three, four better lock your door†etc etc, well Godbotherer seem to have adopted a similar stance although their line is “five, six, seven, eight, Iâll take you all to masturbateâ€. Mmmnnn I think Iâll leave it there. Well I could finish by saying the usual “Check this band out. Buy their demo etc†which of course you should do! But Iâll leave them with an even bigger compliment, which is that bands like these make writing reviews a truly rewarding experience. Superb!
