festival compilation of the Polish Gothic-fest “Castle Party”, that had started back in 1991 on Grodziec Castle. This here is the line-up of the 2002, the ninth, edition and features a whole bunch of bands that most probably won’t really appeal to too many Metalheads.
This compilation can be divided into three categories: Gothic Metal,
Gothic Rock,
Gothic/electronics.
The first part definitely appeals to me, with bands like MOONLIGHT, CLOSTERKELLER (although rather Gothic Doom Rock) and CHRIST AGONY. The mix of Goth and Rock, such as PROJECT PITCHFORK, NEW MODEL ARMY, DANCE ON GLASS or VENUS FLY TRAP is very much a matter of band-to-band, as they differ a lot in their musical approach to the genre, while the mostly electronica-based stuff is not my cup of tea, its that easy. DAS ICH, FADING COLOURS, INSCAPE, ACCESSORY, GODs BOW (which I actually like), VARIETE, SOMNABUL, CLAN OF XYMOX (which are excellent, btw) or DANCE OR DIE fall into this category. So for Goths and other Darkhearts, “Castle Party 2002” surely is a good acquisition as the booklet features short biographies on each act and has a good balance between internationally already established acts and newcomers.
