For those unaccustomed to Eulogys brand of blistering, pummelling hardcore, This Day Forward serves up a battered example like no other. Nothing pretentious here — these guys relentlessly go for the jugular on every track, with their unique crunchy melodic screamcore style. The screamcore tag refers to the painful vocal onslaught that drives each song. Yet, TDF has a hidden weapon with screamer Mike Shaw, as both he and the other band members are not afraid to show their more sensitive melodic side through the use of interspersed emo vocals and melodic guitar passages, bringing to mind older Cave-In, Poison the Well, Shadows Fall, or other equally dynamic bands. The lyrics are intelligent, filled with turmoil and conviction, and the layout is so classy it camouflages the album, appearing to be a melodic hardcore emo act, but the strength of TDF lies in the bands musicianship and aggression. The brutal “End of August” starts off with a quasi-Boy Sets Fire melody, before switching gears into mountain-crushing deathcore (à la “Until Your Heart Stops” era Cave-In). The following track, “The Effects of Departure From Ideal Proportions,” builds momentum under a strange Carbonized-style bass riff, before it crescendos into a tortuous screamfest. Musically, the album has a real indie rock feel at times, yet Shaws screaming vocals never let the album get too friendly. Still, melody presides throughout the entire album. Whether Shaws shrills are a positive is up to the listener to determine, for the music stays solid and tenacious, the integrity of the band is never compromised, and the whole release is consistently delectable from beginning to end. Eulogy may be a newer label, but they will be around for a long time if they keep breeding bands this amazing in the future. Recommended to all brutal hardcore fans, and to those who especially love Poison the Well, Red Roses for a Blue Lady, Unearth, or bands of similar stature.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great band breaks up,
i first bought their newer cd ” in response” which is a little more melodic then heavy but its still good.later i noticed that they had older cds,so listened to the clips on this site and i loved them.this cd is amazing.most of the songs are remastered and reworking from older albums and eps,but this album is still worth the purchase.Heavy,hard-hitting,yet melodic hardcore at its finest from one of the most under-appreciated bands of the late 90s.

put it this way: you’ve got poison the well” the opposite of December”, converge”jane doe” and this day forward”the transient effects of light on the water”.If you have the other two cds, and are big fans of poison the well, converge, than you need this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Your wasting your time reading this, BUY IT NOW!,
The local heroes are back with their second full-length effort (first for Eulogy). 9 songs of power, creativity, sincerity, and total emotion as always. So there are 9 songs on this… 2 new songs (Cupids Diary and Disintegrating Eden), they re-recorded 3 songs off of Fragments.. (Kissing Perfections Cheek, If I Wore A Mask, and Significant Others) and the 4 songs off the demo (My Unbroken Reflection, Writing In Cursive [ which also was on a Breakeven Comp], The End Of August, and The Effects Of Departure…). Great work from these guys. I’m a little upset at the layout, its not as creative as I would expect from these guys. The one thing that bothers me the most is the fact that you can’t hear Shaws vocals over the music, you really have to listen to hear him (or turn it up really loud, which you should do anyway). The recording I believe was done at Skylight but it doesn’t say in the cd. Also they changed some parts on older songs that threw me for a loop. Ahh I’ll just shut up. As I said they always inject all their possible emotions into their music and this is no exception, from start to finish. Musically the Guitars are harder and at times faster, more precise, the percussion is down right perfect, while the bass just floats along blending emotions with beauty. I really don’t have to tell anyone to buy this you should already have it.
