Crucial to a good slab of crushing, crippling, Doom is THAT sound: low, rumbling, mean, swinging, gritty and fuzzy. Glasgow’s DYING SUN most certainly have the authentic Doom sound off pat – on the opening track of their promising three-track “”Nondescript?”” demo the basso profundo timbres ooze out of the speakers like globules of treacle that have been dunked in gravel. Doom Metal focuses its attention to textural detail and DYING SUN have carefully crafted a convincingly dishevelled sonic palette. What’s more, opener “”Slagwaste”” also includes another essential Doom ingredient: the groove – the guitars get down and sway their leaden hips like an E-tripping hippo at an all-night rave. Another element that you will like is the affably pissed-off vocals of Mark Keddie with added commentary from some background roars and growls. In “”Half Mast”” the acoustic and vocal introduction reminds me of some whimsical Prog-rock group from the 1970s – modern Doom makes constant references to that decade … and I don’t mean just BLACK SABBATH – and then Scotland’s finest slot into a strong and neat riff-groove. That’s more like it. The sample effectively adds to the atmosphere of the track. The riff that plunges like a bombed jumbo jet through the final section of “”Half Mast”” is worthy of early CATHEDRAL and I hazard a guess that those esteemed Scottish Doomsters have cast their weird spell on our subjects here.
