Wrecks Monday – Huddersfield
Here’s some information about Wrecks Monday’s debut CD ‘WORK’
If you, like us, yearn for the days when rock music was outrageous, glamorous, exciting and had a sense of humour and fun then this album is for you.
The album kicks off with the suss, sass and swagger of the Diamond David Lee Roth-inspired Cocktail Shaker and the wrecks Monday attempt at introducing a little humour into the current rock scene; next up is the weird and wonderful funked-up, junked-up, turned-on and drugged-out Superman – not a song about the comic book hero but a track that shows the band’s off-the-wall side; track three is the anti-corporation 90’s hard rock rap of Icy Eyes, an angry song and the first one ever written by the band; track four is I’ll Find Love the song that starts as a ballad (an angry one at that) and ends up somewhere completely different it’s a live favourite as well as a band favourite; the next song is the epic Judgement Day a call to arms for rock fans everywhere, inspired by Metallica and forged in the fires of classic British Hard Rock; and finally there’s the tongue-in-cheek, sleazy, good-time rock’n’roll inspired by Zodiac Mindwarp (and recorded in two takes on the final day in the studio) that is Sex God Rocker. The whole thing was recorded and mixed at Woodlands Studio near Castleford in Yorkshire and produced by Pat Grogan who’s previous album was Terrorvision’s ‘Formaldehyde’.
When the album was reviewed in Kerrang! magazine, Dave Reynolds had this to say: “The way things are goin’ on the Sleaze front, this Cock Rock act from Huddersfield could top the league! ‘Work’ is a fun-filled six-tracker that what it lacks in overall quality… is compensated by bags of enthusiasm.”
Whilst I wonder whether Dave was reviewing all six tracks (rather than just the first) this was praise indeed. The band have deliberately included on this debut release the most diverse material that they’ve written in the three years since they formed. Their influences are varied indeed, drummer Cell is heavily into bands like Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam and Guns n’ Roses, while Bassist Mark (a punk at heart) has every Ramones record ever pressed. Guitarist Andy has the most varied musical influences, from early Alice Cooper, Iggy and the Stooges and the Rolling Stones through the thrash metal of Metallica and Slayer and on to Nine Inch Nails, while second guitarist Derrick is into American corporate rock like Van Halen and Bon Jovi. Add to this cocktail vocalist M.C.’s love of bands like Slade, T-Rex, Aerosmith and Alice Cooper with their huge singalong choruses, and over-the-top frontmen like Steven Tyler and Dave Lee Roth and you’ve got a band with the musical potential to produce anything they turn their minds to. And, like other happening British acts The Wildhearts and Terrorvision, not only do they have a wide musical base from which to draw influences but a sense of humour and fun too.
And that’s it some background to Wrecks Monday’s debut album. The awesome Cocktail Shaker’ video that was going to be shown on ‘Noisy Mothers’ (the ITV weekly rock show) before the show was taken off the air.
