huge magazine with the LP inside of the back of the cover. Blancmange is on the cover of the magazine.

Debut LP Magazine was an UK publication from the 80’s that included an LP record containing a compilation of songs by various artists which were, in turn, featured in the magazine. It largely focused on new wave music. They published 11 issues in total, except issues 8 and 9 that came together in one issue.
The magazine is fun because it introduces you to some artists (and one-hit wonders) that you have never heard before. The magazine itself is also interesting for its artist profiles, interviews and dated content—really takes you back to the 80’s. The records were kind of thin. The sound quality, however, is quite good.

Of the artists featured on this issue I was only previously familiar with Prefab Sprout, Shriekback & Blancmange—the rest were totally new to me. That being said, the tracks by Prefab Sprout, Shriekback & Blancmange were tracks I did not already have. The standout track is “Some People” by Belouis Some. This song really captures the essence of new wave. Shriekback’s “Suck” and Blancmange’s “Vishnu” are also quite good. “Suck” is a raucous piece, in typical Shiekback fashion, predominantly featuring the word “suck!” “Vishnu” is a pulsating, hypnotic synthpop piece overlaid with an East-Indian chant about the Hindu god Vishnu.

The signal level is average (-6 dB), although the record is reasonably quiet and free from surface noise, clicks and pops. The recording has little or no dynamic range compression (average score of +0.0 as measured by DRC-Meter). My processed version (click & pop removal, background noise removal, tube preamp simulation and limited to -3 dB) has an average DRC score of +2.4.

I gave this issue 5 out of 5 stars.
