Six young sailors board a ship that will bring them to seas unknown. In the crew, two oarsmen with deafening voices lead the others through the worst storms, with them an experienced helmsman guides the ship out of the toughest situations. Also onboard are a meticulous watchman with a keen eye, alert for tidal waves, a wise little jester to entertain the bunch and finally a scientific scholar who studies the stars to determine their position. Added to this already effective team is a mystical element still untamed by humankind, a beautiful siren named Elda. Her spellbinding cries will follow them during the clear-skied days of summer as well as the stormful nights of winter. Each and every member is as important as the other and they all play key roles in the story about to unfold. And so this powerful vessel has begun its long journey on the mercury oceans of the Earth. Fate has gathered them and together they must find their way. Of course while each and every one of them takes part of this journey with his own expectations, the goal they possess is mutual and the only way to achieve it is perseverance. Come on now, let them guide you in a ride you’ll never forget…

Speechless. Thats precisely how I was when I first listened to the whole album of UNEXPECT, a young Metal-band from Québec, Canada. Combining so many elements from the different sub-genres of Metal, it would be futile to say that all of their songs follow the path of only one of those sub-genres though its easy to notice they are heavily Black Metal-influenced. Often a combination of aggressive percussions and brutal guitars paired with symphonic elements, the final result is a unique experience. Whats remarkable is how well-balanced the album is, alternating between grim and gloomy songs and light symphonic interludes. The vocals are excellent and add diversity, too, because the three singers will jump from one “style” to another, whether its Death, Black, Opera or clean vocals.

To this excellent album, I give a 10 and I shall explain why. These guys aren’t superstars with huge egos, they have poured their heart and soul into this album and thats precisely what you’ll be drinking if you plunge your teeth in any of the 10 songs. Yes, they have talent and a bright future awaits them if they keep up with the excellent work, lets just hope they’re next release is a powerful as this one.
