In 1987-88, the era of knockoff thrash and death metal wannabes, Transgression concocted an unthinkably tuneful mixture of the hooks of SNFU and the blur of Cryptic Slaughter. Their great Cold World album on Manic Ears, the label that paved the way for Earache, is an overlooked gem.

Band Interests: Supporting the underground music scene of Indianapolis, and as always has been the case, to continue to thrash!

Biography:
Transgression has had three primary recordings. The first was a cassette tape titled “Better Days”. A studio album was produced by Paul Mahern (of Zero Boys fame) via the UK label, Manic Ears Records. The album, titled “Cold World”, was released in 1988. Shortly before Transgression disbanded, they recorded a 7 inch vinyl with one of their more progressive tracks titled “Dismay”.
Transgression disbanded for several years, but has recently reunited and has performed a few shows in Indianapolis. After seeing the energy of the local hardcore scene of Indianapolis, Transgression is optimistic that they can continue to thrash with the new as well as the seasoned punk and metal underground of Indy.

This band definitely had a So Cal thrash sound, though fused with elements of Mid-West HC greats Die Kreuzen.  On this record, produced by Paul Mahern of the Zero Boys, their singer reminds me a bit of Charles Maggio of Rorschach, even though they predate that band by a year or two.  Think early Rorschach meets Attitude Adjustment and you’re not far off.  All of those references should have you buying this record by now.  Transgression also has a split 7″ with Apocalypse…

Transgression combined hardcore punk, skinhead, and thrash metal style and music, and they now deserve a higher profile for their originality. In 1987-88, the era of knockoff thrash and death metal wannabes, Transgression concocted an unthinkably tuneful mixture of the hooks of SNFU and the blur of Cryptic Slaughter. Their great Cold World album on Manic Ears, the label that paved the way for Earache, is an overlooked gem!!

Transgression came from Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. Transgression provided 16 brutal songs on Cold World. I was quite into American speed metal acts such as Septic Death, Attitude Adjustment and early DRI. Transgression provided that outlet of extreme speed metal and hardcore. I did get some really cool appraisal of that album one night at a show when Mick Harris, drummer of Napalm Death, pulled me aside and said it was the best new album put out on Manic Ears at the time in 1988. Transgression played extremely fast metal hardcore with attitude. A killer album with some fast and furious music. Totally extreme.

Transgression has regrouped once or twice in recent years minus singer Paul Linhart, who was kind of an innocent 17-year old version of Mike D. Williams from Eyehategod. And a good lyricist! The guitarists Dino and John Zeps are at least still active in Indianapolis bands.

transgression =  an act that goes against a law, rule, or code of conduct; an offence.
