Tobruk was an English rock band, formed in 1981 during the NWOBHM movement, their sound was more melodic and polished After signing to EMI (Parlophone) in 1984 Tobruk went on a club tour before playing some dates with Diamond Head. They also toured the UK supporting UFO.
They then ventured to Philadelphia to start recording their debut album, also titled ‘Wild On The Run”” [(Parlophone / EMI) 1985]. Lance Quinn from Lita Ford and Bon Jovi-fame co-produced the album with the band. The album was released in May 1985 and tours followed supporting UFO, Tokyo Blade and Manowar.
A second album was released through FM Revolver, called ‘Pleasure + Pain’.
Then singer Tony Martin, joined but nothing came of it and the band split for good. Martin went on to join Black Sabbath. Tobruk guitarist Nigel Evans spent some time touring with Shy.
Tobruk vocalist Snake (Stuart Neale) also had a stint in an early incarnation of The Wildhearts but never recorded officially with them, although some demos were produced. Mike Brown played bass in a short-lived band with Alan Kelly (drummer, ex-Shy) called Why The Rabbit shortly after Tobruk broke up. Keyboard player Jem Davies and drummer Eddie Fincher started the band Midnight Blue with one-time Yngwie Malmsteen and Rainbow (band) singer Dougie White and recoded ‘Take The Money And Run’ circa 1994. Davis also toured with UFO and had stints in Praying Mantis and FM.

Superb!!
An absolute must have for any rock/metal collection. Great twin guitar attack, melodic songs, and superb vocals from Snake (R.I.P)!

Damn good…and British too!!!
A British Band that should have had the time and exposure to give Bon Jovi a run for their money? Oh yes, you had better believe it, Tobruk were very good in their day.

This is a great slice of would be American arena rock, with great catchy songs, good production, and a large degree of talent. We have loads of big guitars, mixed with thunderous drums, some fantastic (but not over the top) keyboard work – all mixed into some well thought out and structured songs with some great hooks/melodies. Some people may find the vocal style not to their taste, but you can always check them out before you buy anyway.

There is not really a bad track on the album, with each and everyone being a potential hit single. So why weren’t they more successful? I guess we will never know but, the sad passing of vocalist Snake (R.I.P) put paid to any comeback.

I would advise anyone who likes Y&T, Bon Jovi, Journey, Europe and the like to get this.

Tobruk formed in 1980, when guitarist Mick Newman moved from Bedfordshire, UK, to Birmingham, and once there joined forces with vocalist Stuart “Snake” Neil, guitarist Nigel Evans, keyboard player Jem Davis, bassist Steven Woodward, and drummer Alan Vallance. The band began creating demos, one of which got them a spot on BBC’s The Friday Rock Show in 1982. This then brought them label interest, and they released a single through Neat Records (Wild On The Run in 1983) before then switching out their rhythm section for newcomers Eddie Fincher on drums and Mike Brown on bass.

The new lineup hit the ground running, and soon enough had an album deal with EMI’s Parlophone label. The resulting album, also named Wild On The Run, was released in 1985, and the band went out on tour with Tokyo Blade to promote the album. Things were certainly looking good for the band, but unfortunately things wouldn’t stay this good for very long. Tensions between the band and their label drove Snake and Newman to leave the band during the recording of their second album.

With fans desperate to hear more from Tobruk, FM-Revolver bought the master tapes for the unreleased follow up album and released Pleasure & Pain in 1988. Newman and Snake formed another band called Idol Rich, and Snake would eventually join The Wildhearts. Nothing more has been heard of Tobruk since.TOBRUK: Wild on the Run LP [Quality UK Hard Rock] Check 3 videos

The name of the 1st song is “Breakdown”. The 2nd one is called “Falling”. Both are from the awesome “Wild On The Run” record.

Amazing band, Wild on the Run has been one of my favourite albums for 20 years or something! Like others said, can’t believe they never made it big. I would lend “WOTR” to “pop music fan” friends at school and they would inevitably be totally converted!- killer songs and playing on that album and yes, brilliant production too. I thought his voice sounded fantastic on that record and I’m really surprised to hear he sounds just the as good live!!

absofukinlutely!! the albums production was amazing compared to for example Shy’s first two albums….the singers voice was amazing the guitar solos were crisp and perfect, they looked Scandinavian and pissed all over Europe, its a strange world when Grim Reaper can break America and Tobruk got nowhere, Falling has to be the best pop metal song ever written…amazing
