Black Crowes – Shake Your Moneymaker

Produced by Rick Rubin’s right- hand man, George Drakoulias, the Black Crowes’ debut kicked off with the 70s-style rock of Twice As Hard and never looked forward. The key hit single, Hard To Handle, was originally recorded by soul legend Otis Redding back in 1968.

But the Crowes were no hackneyed bar band. Their youthful energy, and great songs such as Jealous Again and the acoustic ballad She Talks To Angels, connected with a 90s audience.

With eight million units shifted worldwide, Shake Your Money Maker is still the Black Crowes’ biggest-selling album.

“It took a long time because we weren’t used to the studio,” says Crowe Chris Robinson. “We weren’t used to things being perfect. But we were thinking, this is how it’s done so this is how we’ll do it. Though when we bought our freedom with that record selling millions of copies in the States, we never made a perfect record again.”

The Black Crowes are an American, blues-oriented hard rock jam band that has sold over 20 million albums. They were hailed by Melody Maker as “”The Most Rock ‘n’ Roll Rock ‘n’ Roll Band in the World””. In 1990, the readers of Rolling Stone named it the ‘Best New American Band’. The band has toured with acts such as Aerosmith, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Who, AC/DC, The Grateful Dead, and Neil Young. The Crowes – as fans refer to them – are listed at #92 on VH1 “”100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock””.

The Crowes released their first studio album, Shake Your Money Maker, in 1990. On the strength of singles “”Hard to Handle””, “”She Talks to Angels””, “”Jealous Again””, “”Twice as Hard””, “”Sister Luck””, and “”Seeing Things””, their debut album received multi-platinum certification and eventually sold over three million copies. The band cover of Otis Redding “”Hard to Handle”” and their acoustic ballad “”She Talks to Angels”” both broke the Top 30 on the pop charts in 1991. The Black Crowes pumped up their sales by opening for ZZ Top on a tour sponsored by Miller Beer, from which they were fired in March 1991 after Chris Robinson sarcastically remarked about commercialism on stage. The Crowes launched their own tour that May and later took part in a Monsters of Rock tour in the Soviet Union.

The album is named after a classic blues song written by Elmore James. The Black Crowes have played the song live many times over the years, but it is not included on this album.

Shake Your Money Maker peaked at #4 on Billboard Top 200 album chart, and two of its singles, “”Hard to Handle”” and “”She Talks to Angels””, reached #1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

Black Crowes – Hard To Handle (Originally recorded by Otis Redding)

If you want to take on the legendary Otis Redding in a vocal battle, you’d best have your chops down. Seriously. So it’s hats off to Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson, who clearly wasn’t lacking chutzpah on his band’s 1990 debut album. The original from 1968 is a groovy mutha of a song, full of rasping horns and blessed with a brilliant performance by Redding. But the Crowes are up to the task, delivering an equally groovy but somewhat more muscular interpretation. Nice!

5.0 out of 5 stars For those about to rock….this is for you
This is the first Black Crowes album and it introduced them with a bang. From the opener Twice as Hard to the ballad of She Talks to Angels this is a class album throughout. This is blues rock as it should be – authentic, mean & lean, but above all cracking tunes. The Crowes main strength is take the blues and make it sound vibrant rather than just regurgitating tired old formulas. Chris Robinson has a great voice that lives the part, his brother Chris is a possessed demon of a guitarist. They are truly one of the best live acts around and this energy is certainly captured in this album. This is well worth checking out if you like your guitars loud and mean and your music straight from the heart!

5.0 out of 5 stars Real rock ‘ roll for the 90s
I’ve never really been into the Black Crowes, but I picked this their first album up on a whim, seeing it for sale at £6, and I was pleasantly surprised.
The Robinson brothers have written nine out of the album ten songs, and “”$hake Your Moneymaker””, with its gritty, rootsy rock n’ roll sound, is certainly more than good enough for a debut album.

The Black Crowes’ sound is a tough amalgam of rock n’ roll, blues and a little bit of soul, not unlike the Faces or the Rolling Stones. The arrangements are lean, yet muscular, with bluesy guitar riffs that leave room to breathe for the excellent rhythm section of Steve Gorman and Johnny Colt, and superb blues-and-boogie piano by the Rolling Stones’ keyboardist, the great Chuck Leavell.

“”$hake Your Money Maker”” eventually sold millions of copies (more than three in the US alone), and the acoustic ballad “”She Talks To Angels”” was a sizeable hit. And the quality of the Robinson brothers’ songwriting is consistently high almost all the way through, from the hard rock of “”Twice As Hard”” and “”Jealous Again”” to the swaggering, mid-tempo shuffle “”Sister Luck”” and the poignant “”Seeing Things””.

They also throw in a good cover of Otis Redding “”Hard To Handle””, but the original songs are so good that the Crowes really don’t need to rely on covers.

This fine album is for anyone who likes classic, Stonesy rock n’ roll with a bluesy slant.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Black Crowes rock
What an excellent but underrated band the Black Crows are. A fabulous album which I can heartily recommend if this is what does it for you.

Debut album from The Black Crowes, it is filled with excellent songs, including an excellent cover of Hard to Handle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now THIS is rock ‘n roll!
Bought this album after stumbling across he Talks To Angels’ on Intermediate Guitar Coach – loved the song so I decided to buy the rest of their stuff.
Fantastic album, every song defines the lovable rock ‘n roll genre of the early 90s, with that classic ‘Gibson through a Marshall’ set up creating their rock sound . Standout tracks for me include ‘Could I’ve Been So Blind’, he Talks to Angels’ and ruttin’ Blues’ and to be honest there isn’t a single track on here to dislike. Awesome riffs and guitar solos. From ballads (eg eeing Things’, he Talks To Angels’) to ‘in your face’ rockers (eg ‘Could I’ve Been So Blind, ruttin’ Blues’) everything you could expect from the late 80s-early 90s rock era is here. ruttin’ Blues’ is particularly awesome if you’re up for some air guitar!

Whether you’re a Black Crowes fan or not, you’ve got absolutely no excuse not to buy this album if you’re into rock music. They’re not a particularly recognisable band in my opinion because they incorporate such a typical sound but this is why this album is so worth buying – it pretty much in your face, good old rock ‘n roll. Will never tire of this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unmissable Rock N Roll Classic
The Black Crowes’ debut album is a mixture of southern boogie rockers (Thick n Thin, Twice as Hard) and noir ballads (She Talks to Angels). The obvious standout track is the instant classic bar-room swinger single ‘Jealous Again’. This rock n roll band conjure with potent influences such as the Stones, The Faces, The Allman Brothers, Lynnyd Skynnyd and against all odds meld them into surprisingly fresh product. This is the record which showcased the earthy song writing charms of the brothers Robinson. It is also the album which The Crowes have only come close to surpassing fleetingly since. In a time of techno and nu metal they have no peers. If you like rock n roll look no further. Make no mistake, The Black Crowes are the Last Great American Rock n Roll Band and Shake Your Money Maker will make you do just that.
