TANGIER: FOUR WINDS Released 1989 (Atco)

On August 6th, 1989 Tangier released their second album “Four Winds”. The album reached No.91 on the #usbillboardhot100 . Highlight songs: Ripcord, Mississippi, On the Line and Four Winds.

dimension: 10 track album
label: ATCO Records 1989
pressing: German
extras, comments: w. lyric inner sleeve
style: US Hardrock / Southern Rock

this was a very good album. their style can best be described as “Southern Hard Rock” . the sound is in the style of a lot of the 70s bands like bad co. or Lynyrd Skynrd. with a later 80s kick to it. its too bad this style didn’t really jive with the Hair sleaze L.A sound of the day and it got basically ignored by the masses. If you like The Four horsemen or Black Crows, this album is perfect for you.

Released 1989 (Atco)
Billboard Chart Position #91

Tangier is a popular Philadelphia-based American rock band active in the late 1980s and early 90s. The band released three albums with a few line-up changes having a sound somewhere in the middle of straight-up Hard rock to Blues and Southern rock, this all making them somewhat a mixture of Free meets Johnny Winter meets Whitesnake meets Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Tangier formed in Philadelphia by songwriter / guitarist Doug Gordon and grew up in the clubs with bands such as Cinderella, who would later help the group out by having Tangier open for them on on their second major tour.

It wouldn’t be until the follow-up Four Winds, released some four years later, that the band finally received some recognition and a major label deal. It produced the hit singles “On The Line” and “Southbound Train”.

If you’re a fan of Bad Comapny, Tesla, Whitesnake, Great White or any other blues-based rock you’ll pull a Homer Simpson-like drool over this album. The vocalist is PERFECT for this type of music here. Has a HUGE ’89’ vibe to it and by that I’m not saying it sounds dated I’m saying it’s a good time-capsule album for that year in rock. I remember these guys being played a TON, especially ‘On The Line’ , on the radio at the time and there was quite a bit of hype on these guys.

What was it with hair metallers’ fascination with being cowboys? Tangier took it to another level with the cover of their second album, looking like they’d just emerged from the Wild West. Of course there ain’t nothing country about the album – it’s polished hard rock, a little bluesy, a little AOR, with some super solid songs. My favourite was ‘Southbound Train’, which has by far the biggest chorus on the album. It’s a monster!

I got a Fever For Gold, and the only cure is Tangier! An absolute must-have! Production qualities are top-notch, song-writing is extraordinary and  bill mattson ‘s vocals are tremendous! Too bad he was already MIA for the band’s follow-up. Not a bad song anywhere to be found on this fantastic debut album from another one of those short-lived careers that should have been much longer. All killer, no filler from the center to the outer-edge!
