Description

Superjoint Ritual was an American heavy metal band formed by Phil Anselmo, Joe Fazzio, and Jimmy Bower in the early 1990s, later to be joined by Hank Williams III, and Kevin Bond. Their style can be considered a mix of Pantera’s style of groove metal and hardcore punk. A small trace of black metal can be heard too. Bands like Venom, Slayer, Celtic Frost, Voivod, and Darkthrone have been noted as influences also. The name Superjoint Ritual comes from a lyric in the Darkthrone song “The Pagan Winter”. According to Bower, Phil Anselmo wrote 70-80% of the groups music.
Despite their early ’90s establishment, it wasn’t until a decade later, after the folding of Pantera, that the group recorded any albums. It was then that Superjoint Ritual garnered significant TV exposure on programs such as MTV2s Headbangers Ball and Fuse TVs Uranium.
However, the groups time in the spotlight would prove short lived.

“Waiting for the Turning Point”

5.0 out of 5 stars I blacked out with a hatred…i hate enough to see…,
Some people think that they should sound like Pantera because of Phil… some think that they should sound like black flag since the flag were an admitted influence… still others think that maybe they should sound like eyehategod just because jimmy bower is in the band.

The fact is, they don’t sound like any one band. They are doing their own thing, even if it isn’t the most popular thing. Certainly, they aren’t the most technically proficient band, and by no means are they the hardest band around. They do however, have attitude, energy, and some great lyrics(no, not profound, either you get it or you don’t).

If you like bands like Down, Eyehategod, Crowbar, Black Flag, acid bath, Soilent Green, or Black Sabbath, chances are you will like these guys. Just don’t buy the cd expecting a copy of anybody else.

…by the way the production value is excellent on this recording. Dave Fortman produced “lethal dose” with the same clarity as with “confederacy of ruined lives” by eyehategod. (this is a good thing, for those of you not familiar with that album)

5.0 out of 5 stars Superjoint reigns powerful and true,
I’m not going to sit here and tell you about the other bands that Phil’s in or has been it.. This is about Superjoint right now.. F*ck what everyone says about this band listen to the goddamn thing and you be the judge.. The Sickness opens the floodgates to something every special.. Waiting for the turning point splits ya in half before you can realize what just happens and so on.. All 13teen tracks run together crudely and unbridled. The guitars on this CD sound soooo good, it sounds like there about to fall apart or the strings are about to snap at any minute, its awesome.. In my reviews i tend to not gush and to leave the reader(s) wanting to know more.. Anyway if you want something with a kick and a shot of RAGE then you must go with A LETHAL DOSE OF AMERICAN HATRED…PERIOD

5.0 out of 5 stars Phils best album in years,
When I first heard this, I thought it wasn’t as good as Use Once and Destroy. After repeated listenings, though, it started to grow on me. Now I think its better than their first album, better than anything from Down, and better than the Reinventing the Steel, Pantera’s last album.

A few people have complained about Phil’s voice. I admit it has changed a little over the years, and he might not have the same raw power he had in the glory days of Pantera. That doesn’t mean its any worse than before. He still has the same energy, anger, and aggression hes always had. After I listened to the album a few times, I realized I like his new vocal sound as much as the old one. Some people are saying his voice is deteriorating from excessive alcohol and drug use. Maybe thats true, maybe its not. If he hadn’t touched drugs at all, his voice would have changed over time anyway. Nobody with that kind of voice can keep touring with that much energy, year after year, without it having some kind of effect. Just get used to it; stop comparing it to Vulgar Display of Power or Far Beyond Driven. He still sounds awesome.

As for the album itself, it has some of the darkest, most disturbing lyrics I’ve heard. I’ve never used heroin or overdosed on drugs, but the song Sickness makes my skin crawl every time I hear it. Waiting for the Turning Point was great too; it could have been written about the same overdose as Sickness. Never to Sit or Stand Again has some of the sickest, most disturbing lyrics I’ve heard anywhere. Permanently has to be my favorite song on the album; it has just as much power and aggression as anything Phil has done in the last 10 years. Some of the other songs are great, some are just alright, but there isn’t a single bad song on the album.
