Wrong Side Of The Whip is rocking my brains out
What is the deal with this band? I don’t know anything about them but Wrong Side Of The Whip is rocking my brains out. Somebody put it on a playlist of songs from the Scorcese movie The Departed but it is not on the soundtrack.

“”The SUBSTITUTES are here to deliver you from mediocrity to the majesty of rock n roll.”” – KIM FOWLEY: Legendary Hollywood Guru.

Jim Morrison living in a seedy Los Angeles hotel on the corner of La Cienega and Santa Monica Blvd. Fast forward 35 years to the SUBSTITUTES in that same graffiti covered room putting the finishing touches on their album “”THE EXPLODING PLASTIC INEVITABLE.”” Take Hwy 5 to the 101 north to San Francisco, the city that once spawned the 60’s psychedelic rock movement and hippie culture. An indie music scene currently dominates, yet the SUBSTITUTES thrive outside of this creating their own world of music, clubs and scenes. The sound: combine the guitars of Mike and Joel firmly rooted in the 70’s stylings and tones while Britt and Paul channel the groove and feel of James Brown’s rhythm section. Let us not forget the voice, Britt doesn’t just sing, he delivers his lyrics and melodies with the soul and conviction necessary to truly convey these stories! This lays the foundation for their album “THE EXPLODING PLASTIC INEVITABLE.” This record documents the five year existence of the SUBSTITUTES with songs that reflect the dualities of California and its inhabitants: This is the beautiful, sad, and ugly truth of our land.

Rock lives
this album is an embarrassment of riches in grooves that are both slinky and chunky. it features stellar guitar work – the riffs keep comin and the bottom end is a perfect pairing of roybals’ top notch boom-chicka-boom and brits penella’s flat-wound throb. this album answers a few questions i’ve been asking for a while: a) what ever happened to ‘songwriting’? b) where is the next Steppenwolf? and c) can’t anyone sing like a man anymore? it’s all right here.

‘The Exploding Plastic Inevitable’, the hard rockin’
debut release from San Francisco based rockers the,
SUBSTITUTES epitomizes what rock music is all about.
It is POWER. It is ENERGY, HEAVY, LOUD, everything a
rock record should be. With rock solid vocals,
infectious rhythm and soaring guitar riffs, The
Substitutes take you on a wild ride of steroid induced
riff rockers. Here’s how the boys from the bay dish it
out, they combine the energizing guitars of Mike and
Joel, whose playing is deeply rooted in the 70’s
stylings and tones. While Britt and Paul serve up the
groove and feel of Funk Brothers rhythm section. Let
us not forget the band’s lead singer, Britt doesn’t
just sing, he delivers his lyrics and melodies with
the soulful and conviction necessary to truly convey
these stories! This lays the foundation for their
album “”THE EXPLODING PLASTIC INEVITABLE.”” The
Substitutes remind me of a lot of bands who were in my
Dad’s record collection like MC5 and Steppenwolf. Many
of the Substitutes songs seem like they could coexist
somewhere on the Easy Rider soundtrack. The rocking
kicks off big time once you hit play with “”Taken A
Lifetime”” a full throttle rocker that will nail your
ass to the floor! Then you have “”In The City”” that
sounds like the MC5 meets Cactus. Songs like “”First
Thing I Want”” and “”Down On My Lady”” are appealing
because of the heavy and addicting riffs and the cool
vocals. ‘THE EXPLODING PLASTIC INEVITABLE’ is a
recording that makes you think you can time trip back
in time. A time when you got your rocks off with big,
loud kick out the jam guitar rock riffs. Overall, I
must say that Substitute’s debut BLEW ME AWAY. If you
want real rock music that doesn’t suck, give
Substitutes a listen. This album is a must-have for
any self-respecting hard rock listener. – Tony Sison, ALL ACCESS MAGAZINE

STRUTTER’ZINE

SUBSTITUTES  THE EXPLODING PLASTIC INEVITABLE  (INDEPENDENT)

SUBSTITUTES is a Californian band with a big Stoner Rocksound that sounds like a mix between JIMI HENDRIX, KYUSS, THE CULT and KING’S X. Their sound is very professional and without a doubt this independent CD has the same level as a major label release. 10 songs are included and with influences from early 70s and some 80s, this band is playing all-original Rock and Roll. The guitarsound is heavy and groovy, owing much to early BLACK SABBATH and JIMI HENDRIX, while the vocalwork is in a sort of JIMI HENDRIX meets PHIL LYNOTT kinda style. Their CD ‘The exploding plastic inevitable™ is highly recommended to anyone into big 70s Heavy Rock, especially to fans of JIMI HENDRIX.
