Love Among the Cannibals is a deadly A.O.R album released in 1989 by rock band Starship. It was their last studio release. The album had one top-20 single on the Billboard charts, “It Not Enough”, the album itself climbed to #64.

This is the eventual end result of Jefferson Airplane who lost some personnel, had a few new band members, lost a part of their name, changed their name, released material after there were internal changes, changed their style (a few times), had a fight over who could use what part of the name, who couldn’t use it at all, and eventually released an album that was a million miles removed from their early career releases AND did not have Grace Slick in its lineup. RCA, 1989.

August 15, 1989 • European Vinyl • Although this album lacks Grace Slick, the band member since the Jefferson Airplane days, that didn’t deter the band leader Mickey Thomas from pursuing the gist of melodic rock. It surely has some catchy tracks just like previous works such as “Blaze of Love”, “It’s Not Enough”, “The Burn” and Def Leppard styled “I Didn’t Mean to Stay All Night” but other tracks show the band’s mature and refined side. Particularly “We Dream in Colour” that can be the culmination of the band’s whole career. The album had one top 20 single on the Billboard charts, “It’s Not Enough”, which peaked at No. 12 in October 1989 and was their final Top-40 hit, but the album itself only climbed to No. 64.

Great singer “”Mickey Thomas””. One of the most underrated vocalists in Rock and Roll! I put Mickey is the same league as Steve Perry, Geoff Tate, and Bruce Dickerson (Iron Maiden).?

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for “”Jefferson Airplane”” fans; definitely for AOR fans
This album was the last album of original material put out by the Starship in their long and varied career. While I was not a fan of most of the old “”Jefferson Airplane”” stuff from this band, I was a moderate fan of the ’80s pop/rock phase of “”Starship””. While not in my opinion the best of the best of melodic pop/rock, it was mostly very good music that also spawned several big hits. Ironically with this last release that marked the beginning of the end of the band, I feel this band reached its prime in terms of pure melodic rock/AOR on this album. Grace Slick is not on the album, allowing Mickey Thomas and company to pursue a more “”anthem rock”” direction than ever before. (Note: coming from me, “”anthem rock”” is not a derogatory term, unlike with snobby music critics and pure alternative rock fans.)
This album reminds me a bit of Survivor “”Vital Signs”” album–not that it is quite that good but in that most of the songs sound like they could be quality melodic pop/rock singles. I actually know of four singles on this album, but only one of them became at all known at the time.

“”It Not Enough”” was the one top 40 hit (# 12) on this album–a mid-tempo heartfelt sad love song of sorts and vintage Starship. Songs like “”The Burn”” and “”Send A Message”” are very catchy and melodic tracks worthy of hit status. “”I Didn’t Mean To Stay All Night”” was a very minor hit that sounds like a slower Def Leppard track from that time–particularly with the melodies and vibe of the chorus. “”Wild Again”” is a rocking track with a catchy chorus that was also a minor hit and was originally on the “”Cocktail”” movie sound track. “”Blaze Of Love”” is further anthemic AOR bliss, and the closing track “”I’ll Be There”” is a great ballad that was also a very minor hit.

The only tracks that get a bit off the mainstream melodic pop/rock singles sound are the title track and “”We Dream In Colors””, but these are both interesting tracks that add to the flow of the album early in the second half.

If you love melodic rock by such acts as Survivor or enjoyed Richard Marx in his early, somewhat rocking days, you should give this album a listen. Pure AOR bliss from beginning to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really love Starship.
I’m actually not sure if it the import version I’ve listened to, but…Yes, I love Grace Slick, but the band is good even without her. Mickey Thomas carries the songs with his voice, which bursts with energy and feeling. “”Trouble in Mind”” and “”Wild Again”” and “”The Burn”” are all good songs to sing while banging on things. In a couple of places the album gets sappy, but that happens from time to time. I love this album just as much as I love the others. Yummy Starship!

5.0 out of 5 stars MICKEY THOMAS IS THE MAN!
Great album! I DO miss GRACE on this one, she certainly is one of my all time favorite singers. Mickey claims this album as his own, and has the voice to do so. Casual listeners will dismiss this as AOR nonsense, but to me there is a lot of great song writing and songs that may sound dated, but still can PUMP ME UP as I crank these in my car stereo. Maybe the production is not so innovative, but fans of DEF LEPPARD and BON JOVI should appreciate the tactics applied….I only wish GRACE was there to trade off with MICKEY on ‘THE BURN’, ‘TROUBLE IN MIND’, or any of the power ballads. END A MESSAGE’ shouts out to the PATRICK LEONARD productions of MADONNA, and fans of 80 TINA TURNER can appreciate MICKEY soulful delivery on ‘WILD AGAIN’. I suppose calling the sound of this album ‘DATED’ or ‘CLASSIC’ is like saying GLASS HALF EMPTY of FULL….just depends on what you like. If you like 1989, this album will love you back!
