Description

Spock’s Beard is a progressive rock band formed in 1992 in Los Angeles by brothers Neal and Alan Morse. Neal played keyboards and was the lead vocalist, as well as being the primary songwriter before leaving the band in 2002 to pursue a solo career. Alan plays electric guitar. The pair teamed with fellow musicians Nick D’Virgilio (drums) and Dave Meros (bass), were later joined by veteran keyboardist Ryo Okumoto.
The band plays a brand of progressive rock with pop music leanings (drawing much influence from Genesis), but have toured with Dream Theater. The band is also well known for their intricate multi-part vocal harmonies (such as those found on certain Gentle Giant songs) and use of counterpoint.

….a good album; Spock’s Beard has evolved to an even more Genesis prog-rock sound on this album. Morse himself seems really happy about it though, calling it the best he has done.
V is the fifth studio album of progressive rock band Spock’s Beard.

One of the best Neo-Prog albums.

I remember waiting impatiently for the release of this album. I had been a big prog fan in the 80s (Marillion, IQ, Pallas, etc., etc.), but during the 90s found nothing to scratch my itch and drifted. But by accident, I heard SB (Skin) and quickly Day For Night, loved it and bought the previous 3 p.d.q. – and loved them. I saw them twice on the DFN tour (inc. w/ Dream Theater) and was in awe – the excitement of truly great prog hadn’t died ten years before! Back to V …

Six songs including two epics, but that is not to decry the shorter songs. Revelation has crunch and power; Thoughts (Pt 2) is not only stunning in the studio, but a show-stopper live; All On A Sunday, a wonderful single; and Goodbye is a beautiful ballad.

But the epics which bookend this are jaw dropping. ATEOTD opens the disc beautifully, and I knew at once the album was going to be something special. My ears and heart were captured right away. I was sucked into world which DFN had skirted around. The first 3 albums were prog of increasing quality. DFN was a little more commercial, and a little less proggy. “V” combined the two perfectly. These guys knew how to do incredible melodies, catching tunes, melded with complexity and epic-ness.

The Great Nothing is great, but is no-way nothing. You cannot sustain 28 minutes without true talent all around. The story is engrossing, before you’ve even caught the musicianship. It weaves and drives, it rocks and it winds.

This tour was their last with Morse. Their Astoria show was said by the band themselves to be the best they ever did. I was there. I can believe it.

Five Stars To V

Upon it’s release, V helped to set the benchmark for 90’s prog and rekindled interest among the wider public in what was thought to be a moribund genre. Every track creates a new twist on familiar themes and is packed full of exuberance, wit and life. Buy it; you have to.

Similarities to Symphony X’s “”V””
There is some remarkable similarity with the cover of this album and the cover of Symphony X’s album V: The New Mythology Suite. The latter is also the fifth album of the respective band and was released later in the same year. Both bands perform progressive music and both are signed to InsideOut Music. Also, both albums are nearly as long (their lengths differ by 11 seconds). Both bands have said that these similarities are a complete coincidence.
