The band were formed in the early 1990s by former Cook Da Books guitarist/singer Peter “Digsy” Deary, his brother Stephen and friends Jason Riley and Paul Cavanagh.

They recorded a session for John Peel’s BBC Radio 1 show in November that year. They broke into the UK top 75 with “Wasted” in September 1996. Their next single, “Is”, which featured Noel Gallagher on guitar, gave them their biggest hit, reaching number 55 in the UK in March 1997. The band’s debut album, Badly Badly, was released in April 1997. A second album was recorded, featuring a guest appearance from Richard Hawley, but it remained unreleased, and the band split up.

The band’s lyrical themes included relationships, financial problems, and Digsy’s experiences with drugs.

Noel Gallagher names Liverpool cult band Smaller in his favourite albums of all time

Ex-Oasis star names Smaller’s debut Badly Badly alongside The Beatles, Pink Floyd and The Smiths

Noel Gallagher has named Smaller’s record Badly Badly in his favourite albums of all time

Gallagher, who releases new solo album Chasing Yesterday on March 2, picked Smaller’s 1997 debut album Badly Badly alongside The Beatles’ Revolver, Pink Floyd’s The Wall and The Smiths’ The Queen Is Dead.

Formed in the early 1990s by guitarist and singer Peter ‘Digsy’ Deary, Smaller, who also featured Peter’s brother Stephen on drums, Jason Riley on bass and Paul Cavanagh on guitar, became one of many bands to hit the charts in the Britpop era thanks mainly to their association with Oasis.

Smaller’s debut release was the single God I Hate This Town in 1995 while third single Is features Noel on guitar and gave them their biggest hit, reaching number 55 in March 1997.

The band’s debut album, Badly Badly, was released in April 1997, and featured further contributions from Noel so perhaps it’s not such an odd choice for Gallagher senior who told itunes:  “You’ll most probably never have heard of this mob. You’ll most probably never have heard this record.  The songwriting is immense.

“Bitter and twisted but funny as f***.

“Like if Steptoe ever made a record… only smellier! Take a punt on it… I dare you!”

Smaller split up after a recording a second unreleased album but Digsy is still active musically as frontman of The Sums who released their second studio album Start At The Finish at the end of the last year.

Six Smaller Facts:

1. Smaller’s second album Start At The Finish featured Richard Hawley.

2. Digsy described Smaller as ‘country and northern meets Scouse grunge.’

3. Smaller’s second single Wasted reached #72 in the UK charts in September 1996.

4. Digsy also formed Liverpool new wave band Cook da Books in the 80s – their politically charged debut single Piggie in the Middle 8 featured lyrics about the Toxteth riots.

5. Smaller recorded a session for John Peel in November 1995.

6. Legend has it Digsy won several competitions at Butlins and in his youth, his uncle introduced him to Tony and Chris Griffiths who went on to form another Merseyside cult band, The Real People.
