Description
Skyforger hail from Latvia, and they are the most popular band in that small Baltic country. They are characterised by loyalty to their roots, their good taste for true metal and singing about national history in their lyrics. This is a re-release of Skyforger demo emigalls’ Warchant’, initially released in ’97 and has been long out of print, and as a special bonus they included a brand new EP called ‘Asinslauks’. The demo sounds rough but acceptable even for present standards. Their midpaced black metal with some emerging trademark medieval instrumentations as flute and deep drums works well and don’t come across as a gimmick. The vocals are very much like Attila Csihar (Mayhem, Aborym) but more high pitched, and significantly less irritating. A must for every fan because the quality is already present. Then it time for the bonus EP. Not surprisingly the production is much better although still not too slick, there are still some rough edges. A more melodic approach is handled and the incorporation of the medieval instruments is more natural and fluent. The vocals are different too, as in a more normal pitched type is used and it is more aggressive sounding. The EP in itself would be buy worthy not only for fans but also people into folk inspired pagan metal in general. The fact that you receive both the fine demo as an EP for the price of one is to be praised.
