Skid Row, released in January 1989, was an instant success. The record went 5x platinum and produced the hit singles “”18 and Life””, “”I Remember You””, and “”Youth Gone Wild””. Despite this success there was a lot of bitterness, because in return for the helping hands of Jon Bon Jovi they had to enter a publishing deal with his newly established Underground Music Company in which they waived their rights to publishing royalties. All money was paid to Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora. After a public dispute Richie Sambora gave his share of the money back to Skid Row.

Skid Row is the debut album from the American heavy metal band Skid Row, released on January 24, 1989. The album is certified 5x Platinum by the RIAA. The album spawned the top 10 singles “”18 and Life”” and “”I Remember You”” and the Mainstream rock hit “”Youth Gone Wild””. It is the band most commercially successful album. It went on to sell over 10 million copies worldwide, including 5 million in the United States alone

Skid Row epitomised the latter stages of hair metal. With a pretty, OTT frontman in Sebastian Bach, they had a man willing to sell his mother for the slightest whiff of fame. And it duly came along with this record. The rest of the band were seasoned players, so songs like 18 And Life and Youth Gone Wild were immediate and anthemic. Given the material, they knew exactly how to treat it. Bach was living it large, and Skid Row quickly became the rock monster he craved.

“I remember playing Youth… with the guys,” her says. “and when we got to the middle part where we do the chorus with just drums and vocals, I sang the entire thing in one breath. And they all went: ‘Holy shit, man!’. They couldn’t believe it.”

Skid Row took off practically upon its release in January 1989, thanks in no small part to Youth…, which was issued as the album’s first single. The song – and the accompanying video – announced the band as rock’s newest bad boys, the seedy underside of the poppy, Winger/Warrant- style hard rock that had started to dominate the music landscape.

Μάλιστα… Τι έχουμε εδώ; Θα σου πω τι έχουμε. Ένα από τα κορυφαία ντεμπούτα της αγαπημένης μας μουσικής και ένα από τα καλύτερα άλμπουμ όλων των εποχών. Γιατί τέτοιο είναι το πρώτο άλμπουμ των SKID ROW. Ασύλληπτο!
Ο δίσκος έσκασε σαν βόμβα το σωτήριο έτος 1989! Λίγο η ομορφάδα του Sebastian Bach, λίγο ότι κινήθηκε μεταξύ βρωμιάς και αλητείας αλλά με μία παραγωγή κρύσταλλο, λίγο το “18 and life”, το “Youth gone wild” και το “I remember you”, όπως αντιλαμβάνεστε δεν ήταν και κάτι το δύσκολο για να πετύχει ο δίσκος. Για όσους δεν μπορείτε να καταλάβετε το μέγεθος του συγκεκριμένου δίσκου, αναφέρω ενδεικτικά ότι πούλησε κάτι παραπάνω από 6.000.000 κόπιες, και μάλιστα σε μια εποχή που ναι μεν το ιδίωμα ήταν στα ύψη αλλά υπήρχαν μπάντες όπως οι BON JOVI, GUNS ‘N’ ROSES, KISS, MOTLEY CRUE, που είχαν τη μερίδα του λέοντος όσον αφορά τις πωλήσεις και μέσα σε όλα αυτά χωρίς να βάλω μέσα τους DEF LEPPARD του “Hysteria” για να μην ξεχνιόμαστε. Ο δίσκος ξεκινάει με κομμάτια δυναμίτες γιατί τέτοια είναι τα “Big guns” και “Sweet little sister” για να ακολουθήσει το “Can’t stand in the heartache” προκειμένου να μας δείξουν την πιο light πλευρά του σκληρού εαυτού τους. Το “Piece of me” κινείται στο ίδιο μήκος κύματος με το προηγούμενο για να φτάσει ο ακροατής στο “18 and life” και να παγώσει το αίμα του από το μεγαλείο του τραγουδιού! Δε νομίζω ότι υπάρχει άνθρωπος που δεν το έχει ακούσει, ειλικρινά δηλαδή. Το “Rattlesnake shake” είναι ένα χορευτικό σφηνάκι για να ακολουθήσει ο απόλυτος ύμνος των απανταχού έφηβων τούτου του πλανήτη, το “Youth gone wild”. Τραγούδι-ύμνος, ξεχειλίζει από σπιρτάδα και νεανικότητα, στίχοι που σε κάνουν να πιστεύεις ότι το συγκεκριμένο τραγούδι γράφτηκε για σένα και ένας Bach να αλωνίζει και να είναι ο απόλυτος άρχοντας του παιχνιδιού. “Here I am” και “Making a mess” μας θυμίζουν τι συμβαίνει στην Αμερική του 1989 για να λιώσει η καρδιά του κάθε επίδοξου wannabe αρσενικού με το “I remember you”. Μιλάμε για μία από τις κορυφαίες μπαλάντες που έχουν γραφτεί στην αγαπημένη μας μουσική με τον Bach να μας χαρίζει μία από τις καλύτερες ερμηνείες της καριέρας του. Η δισκάρα ετούτη κλείνει με το “Midnight/Tornado”, μία φανταστική σύνθεση όπου από το μεσαίο σημείο και μετά η μπάντα πραγματικά δίνει ρεσιτάλ παιξίματος και ενορχήστρωσης καθιστώντας το κομμάτι σε ένα από τα καλύτερα της πορείας τους έως σήμερα.
Τα πολλά λόγια είναι φτώχια φίλοι μου. Το 1989 έχει πολλούς λόγους να είναι περήφανο και ένας από αυτούς είναι και αυτός ο δίσκος. Ένα βήμα πριν την αλλαγή της δεκαετίας βγήκε αυτό το διαμάντι το οποίο θα παραμείνει άφθαρτο εις τους αιώνες των αιώνων! [Ντίνος “Benjamin Breeg” Γανίτης]
