Screams – Screams
Label: Infinity Records
Catalog#: INS 2007
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album
Country: UK
Released: 1979
Screams was a late ’70s Power pop band who produced one album titled Screams. Screams has been compared to Cheap Trick.
This band backed up Van Halen on their first album tour. Â Drummer Brad Steakley (also known as Brad Elvis) has played drums for the Romantics for 17 years. As for Screams, this was their only album and is absolutely killer power pop along the lines of a punky early Cheap Trick. The first song, Paper Dolls, has a vocal melody that is slightly reminiscent of an early Foo Fighters song, but push through that discomfort and you’ll be richly rewarded, ha ha. I guess there is no immediate stand out single here, which is kinda what these type of bands needed to break through, but this is a solid album from start to finish with subversive hooks that become more apparent after a few listens.

Hailing from the Peoria/Pekin area and then Champaign, Illinois, The Screams lineup consisted of singer David Adams, bassist Steven Jones, guitarist John Siegle and drummer Brad Steakley. Co-produced by Terry Luttrell and Tom Flyte, the album featured an excellent set of power pop influenced by Cheap Trick (a lot…) and The Who with songs such as “”Paper Dolls””, “”Angeline Toys””, “”It Just a Matter of Time””, “”Pen Pal”” and “”Financial Disaster (It Only Money)””.They were featured on an episode of England’s Old Grey Whistle Test television show It was during this tour, however, that they received word that Infinity Records was being shut down due to mis-management of funds. Screams caught the next plane home… tried to make another go of it, adding singer/guitarist Graham Walker, but they never quite got off the ground again. Eventually they split up and went their separate ways.
I’ve become quite fond of this slice of late-1970’s power pop.
The lineup consisted of singer David Adams, bassist Steven Jones, guitarist John Siegle and drummer Brad Steakley. Judging by the liner notes on 1979 “”Screams”” they were apparently from Champaign, Illinois (at least that where their fan club was located). Co-produced by Terry Luttrell and Tom Flyte, the album featured an excellent set of power-pop, though the band added a dark edge to tracks such as “”Paper Dolls”” and “”Angeline Toys””. Full of highly commercial and radio ready material, highlights included “”It Just a Matter of Time””, “”Pen Pal”” and “”Financial Disaster (It Only Money)””.
Siegle reappeared as a member of Chicago The Insiders. Steakley played with The Elvis Brothers (as Brad Elvis), Three Hour Tour and Big Hello.

great mid-west rock lp! Saw them open for Van Halen on the vh2 tour in Springfield Illinois.. went out the next day and bought the 8-track! i had no idea they were from champaign , i grew up in decatur! haha. reminds me of Cheap Trick – Head East – and some REO. great to find this again! thanks for posting the video Doc_Smiley
The producer of this LP was Terry Luttrell, who during the early 70’s was the lead vocalist with REO Speedwagon (see first album), and later taking on the role as vocalist with the mid – late 70’s lineup of US progressive rock band “Starcastle”.
Recently I pulled this LP out of storage and gave it a spin. I hadn’t played it in awhile, and was surprised at how well it’s aged. I actually prefer it more today than I did 30 years ago upon first hearing it.The band line-up was as follows:David Adams – Vocals
Steven Jones – Bass
John Siegle – Guitars
Brad Steakley aka Brad Elvis – DrumsAfter the dissolution of “Screams”, John Siegle reappeared as a member of Chicago’s “The Insiders”, and Brad Steakley played with “The Elvis Brothers” (as Brad Elvis), “Three Hour Tour”, “Big Hello”, and is a currently a member of “The Romantics” under the alternate name Brad Elvis.
