This is my favourite saga album. Saga reaches here the peak of their career. Although not in the same vein as their earlier efforts, this opus deals nonetheless with very good stuff, keyboard-oriented and melodic. Michael Sadler has a very pleasant voice and Steve Negus plays brilliantly both electronic and acoustic percussion. For those who like ‘Power windows’ or ‘Hold your fire’ by Rush, this album is highly recommended. Enjoy it!!

Excellent Pop-Rock Prog effort. It’s possible that many SAGA fans don’t like the style of this record but here we’ve got many of their best songs ever and classics like ‘Take A Chance’ ‘Misbehaviour’, ‘Here I Am’ and ‘(Goodbye) Once Upon A Time’ probably the best points of the album. Also the production is great! by far better than the production of their previous release ‘Heads Or Tales’. This is definitively my favourite album. JUST TRY IT!!!
In 1985, a lot of the big prog rock bands had changed their sounds towards a more commercial synth heavy sound (Yes, Genesis, Rush to name a few), and while Saga had already been going in that direction since their start in the late 70s, they here venture even more into a 80s pop sound (”You And the Night” sounds like U2!), although with some prog rock elements left. It features more than enough top songs to make it another need to have Saga album, with highlights like ”What Do I Know?” (a successful single), ”Take a Chance” and ”Listen to Your Heart”.
Behaviour is the sixth studio album by the Canadian progressive rock band Saga, and was originally released in 1985, two years after the moderately successful Heads or Tales. Behaviour was itself successful, and managed to outsell its 1983 predecessor thanks to the strong performance of the single “What Do I Know?”.
The album contains singer Michael Sadler’s most personal song, “(Goodbye) Once Upon a Time”, which he said was written about his late father and which still brought up strong emotions when performed years after the album’s release.
The 1985 album was a marked departure for the band as Saga moved on from working with Rupert Hine, who had produced the band’s last two albums and helped to land the band commercial success during the early part of that decade. There was an overhaul of both the sounds and styles incorporated by the band during the development of the new album, leading Saga to produce a more pop-oriented sound than their previous progressive rock works.
These changes caused tensions within the band during the production. After the album was released, singer Michael Sadler informed drummer Steve Negus and Jim Gilmour that they were no longer welcome in the band, beginning a rift in the band that lasted until 1991. Speaking in interviews during 2002, at the time the band members regarded this division as only temporary and felt the five members would eventually be reunited.

1985’s Behaviour marks the final album with the solidified line-up of Sadler/Gilmour/Crichton/Crichton/Negus before Steve Negus and Jim Gilmour left the band for a few years. A fairly strong follow-up to Heads or Tails, Behaviour boasts a few killer songs, but also hints at the more commercial and poppy direction the band would take over the next few years.
Among the winners here; “Listen to Your Heart” kicks off the LP on a high note, with crunchy guitars from Ian Crichton and a catchy chorus, and overall is somewhat of a distant cousin to their older song “Don’t Be Late.” “Misbehaviour” is a pop song with balls, as the hooks are contrasted with some punchy synth beds and heavy metal guitar licks, while “What Do I Know” is straight pop, well done, but missing some of the usual prog embellishments. The rampaging “Easy Way Out” is a classy, sophisticated rocker, with meaty riffs and lots of lightning synth passages from Gilmour. A similar formula is followed on the excellent “Here I Am”, with Sadler’s passionate vocals leading the charge on this arena rocker. Crichton’s venomous guitar licks take on a Steve Lukather/Steve Morse tone on this cut, showing what a truly remarkable player he really is. The longest song on the LP is the closer “(Goodbye) Once Upon A Time”, an atmospheric and moody number that is heavy on the keyboards and soothing , melodic vocals. At almost 7-minutes long, it takes the listener on a dreamy ride, at times spacey, at times bursting with hard proggy bliss, basically a real winner.
The last great SAGA album (for a while). The first “concept” album by SAGA as all the songs deal with the theme of love. A BRILLIANT album, the best keyboard & guitar work melt together with the lyrical twists of the experience of dealing with love.
