only a couple of hundred were issued in this superb sleeve before Epic replaced it with the generic title sleeve, by far the rarest Sade 12″ sleeve.

“Cherish the Day” is a song by the English band Sade, released in 1993 as the fourth and final single from their fourth studio album, Love Deluxe (1992).

Sade – Cherish The Day
Label:Epic
Catalog#: 659481 6
Format: Vinyl, 12″
Country: UK
Released: 1993

UK 12″ maxi single
Side A:
“Cherish the Day” (Sade Remix Long Version) 6:21
“Cherish the Day” (Ronin Remix) 6:59
Side B:
“Cherish the Day” (Pal Joey Remix) 6:42
“Cherish the Day” (Sade Remix Short Version) 5:18

A1 The Sade Remix of the title track is essentially the single version. If there are any major differences compared to the album version during the first five minutes, they are subtle. The main difference is that, where the album version normally fades out, this version keeps going. It then stops, and there is another short instrumental section. The instrumental part really adds to the song.  It is a beautiful song. A2 The Ronin & B1 Pal Joey remixes of “Cherish” both blend hip-hop, soul, and jazz. Both mixes are enjoyable, and maintain the beauty of the original. I’m slightly more partial to the Ronin mix.

I recommend this rare 12″ to major Sade fans and collectors. Casual fans need not apply.

The ultimate love surrender
From the opening of that sexy island guitar to the very end, Sade’s sultry vocals cast a captivating spell. “If you were mine/If you were mine/I wouldn’t want to go to heaven!”                                    The last 2 mixes are the best. The Ronin remix is a bit fuller and more airy with subdued horn flourishes and hypnotic echoes of the guitar. The Pal Joey remix is more low-key and jazzy. Excellent.

Lyrics

You’re ruling the way that I move
And I breathe your air
You only can rescue me
This is my prayer
If you were mine
If you were mine
I wouldn’t want to go to heaven
I cherish the day
I won’t go astray
I won’t be afraid
You won’t catch me running
You’re ruling the way that I move
You take my air
You show me how deep love can be
You’re ruling the way that I move
And I breathe your air
You only can rescue me
This is my prayer
I cherish the day
I won’t go astray
I won’t be afraid
You won’t catch me running
I cherish the day
I won’t go astray
I won’t be afraid
Won’t run away
You show me how deep love can be
You show me how deep love can be
This is my prayer
I cherish the day
I won’t go astray
I won’t be afraid
Won’t run away
Won’t shy
I cherish the day
I won’t go astray
I cherish the day
I cherish the day
I cherish the day
I cherish the day
I cherish the day
Songwriters: HALE / ADU / MATTHEWMA

“Cherish the Day” is a song by English band Sade from their fourth studio album, Love Deluxe (1992). It was released as the album’s fourth and final single in the United Kingdom on 17 July 1993 and in the United States on 11 September 1993.
Critical reception: Justin Chadwick from Albumism described the song as “soaring”, adding that “a wistful Adu sings of finding a love so supreme that nothing in this life or beyond can ever compete” Tanya Rena Jefferson of AXS stated, “This joyous soulful song embraces one to cherish each and every day.” Troy J. Augusto from Cashbox said it “sports Sade’s usual understated musical arrangement, allowing the lead vocals, even as laid back as they are, to be the centrepiece of the song.” The Daily Vault’s Mark Millan called it “enchanting”, adding it as “one of the album’s finest moments as the guys offer a minimal but lush track for Adu to weave her tale of the ultimate love, all the while finally exploring her considerable vocal range.”  Ron Fell from Gavin Report noted that “the sweet surrender” of the song is “timeless and classic Sade and could have come from any of her previous three volumes of platinum cool.” Sophie Heawood of The Guardian commented “The band at their most abstractly evocative: at their best, they could do a remarkable amount with very little – as proved by this song, during which immense yearning is conveyed.” Music & Media wrote, “Despite the artwork, showing Sade with a guitar and a stack of speakers in the background, she hasn’t rocked up her sound. On the contrary, with a lonely drum track on a synth carpet, ‘ambient soul’ is within reach.”  Frank Guan of Vulture added, “Her minimalist lyrics… say all that needs to be said, and once a ten-note bassline jumps in to underscore her depth of feeling over the misty synths, the song is perfect and complete.”

Music video
Filmed in black and white by Derek M. Allen, the music video for “Cherish the Day” features Sade Adu performing the song whilst playing the guitar on the rooftop of a New York City skyscraper as her bandmates and a few other people vibe to the music on the streets below.
