Sad Cafe’s fourth album is filled with blues-rock songs with a touch of soft rock — or vice versa, depending on the song. Standouts like “Black Rose” and “Babylon” showcase the bands love for Styx and the Rolling Stones, respectively, and the occasional ballad (“Feel Like Dying”) doesn’t cause the album to lose its spirited momentum. Vocalist Paul Young tries very hard to be Mick Jagger on some tracks, but he’s so dead-on that he deserves some credit. Overall, this is Sad Cafe’s best.

Misplaced Ideals saw the band mixing styles again: light reggae, Hall & Oates-type soul (no surprise therefore that I once met the bands rhythm guitarist Ian Wilson at a H&O concert in Manchester), plus some outright rock. Though the last track on MI, On With The Show was a great live opener for Sad Cafe. There are some real gems in this album with Mario and Feel Like Dying being my favourites. How Black Rose was never a hit is indeed a mystery!! This is indeed a wonderful album!! There are again loads of different styles of song, combining to make this a great album. All in all if you like top notch guitar rock music, with injections of total class, you’ll probably never spend a better £13!!!!!

I instantly fell for it. An odd mix of soul and Prog/pop elements.10cc comes to mind at times. Eric Stuart, in fact, produced the Facades album. Superb playing and warm arrangements make this a delight. All that’s good about ’70s music resides here. Fans of Mike And the Mechanics will notice Paul Youngs residence here. The fact that both LPs are together is an added plus. GREAT!
