this is another great UK A.O.R. band…
Great AOR is what we get here, lots of keyboards and nice vocals. Best tracks in my opinion is ‘I Don’t Wanna Be The Fool’,’ Straight To The Heart’, ‘Tommy Can’t Help It’ and ‘Close To You’ if you like UK AOR in general this is for you, not a weak track in sight!
It sounds a little bit like Beau Geste or Bryan Hughes Group, Not a weak track, decent record 8,5/10
Right..I’m gonna put my b*lls on the line here and say that this band were probably the best A.O.R. outfit from the U.K. Forget F.M., Outside Edge, Virginia Wolf, Shy(te), Airrace, Heartland (except maybe Move On which is pretty cool but out of the time frame) who were all around at the same time, this album is almost perfect and for its time was a masterpiece. This is what makes A.O.R. great cool tunes, fantastic melodies…its aged a little but not so much that you wouldn’t love it! Please buy!

Have to say that is one of the greatest A.O.R. albums ever released, sounds like a mix of MR. MISTER, Cuttting Crew and Boulevard, best tracks: don’t wanna be the fool, tommy cant help it, straight to the heart. If find it…BUY IT! I give it 95/100
really love this one, one I had on vinyl and revisiting, forgot how great and catchy it is, Fool stands out for me in a no skip album, fantastic stuff!!!!
This is a largely undiscovered classic British A.O.R. album with strong songs & production. This was definitely the stronger of their two albums, with more consistent songwriting. Melodic hooklines & strong choruses abound but if one had to name the stand out cuts they would have to be straight to the Heart’ & she’s a Virgin! !!
A real jewel,magic is what we have here,great melodies and catchy hooks,awesome solos, and all become in a killer A.O.R. album,tracks?…,all the album is great,I dont wanna be the fool, Tommy can´t help it, Better this time, State of emergency, Shy girl….more please…9.5/10.
Really amazing stuff,this is more “poppy” than their follow up Sex Crimes but, man,this is a blast of an album..”I Don’t Wanna Be The Fool” is by far the best track and also, as far as i remember,a hit..”Shy Girl” and “Borderland” are top notch tracks too..then we have goodies such as “Straight To The Heart”,”Tommy Can’t Help It”(smooth,yeah) and “Shes A Virgin”..is a shame that this band didn’t release anymore albums because this duo (Neill and Rodford) are fantastic musicians(multi-instrumentalists).94/100

Τα μελωδικά μονοπάτια των RIO
Ένα λοιπόν ένα από τα πιο ενδιαφέροντα ευρωπαϊκά γκρουπ είναι και οι RIO όπου η πορεία τους ξεκινά το 1982 με αρχικό όνομα ΒΟΜΒΑΥ που αποτελούνται από τον τραγουδιστή John Neill (πρώην Black Tiger), τον μπασίστα/ κημπορντίστα Steve Rolford (πρώην Duchess) και τον ντράμερ Dave Kilminster. Όλη αυτή η παρέα ηχογραφεί ένα πολύ καλό demo με παραγωγό τον John Verity όπου τους απέφερε και το πολυπόθητο συμβόλαιο με την ιστορική εταιρία Music For Nation.
Aξίζει εδώ να επισημάνουμε πως ο J.Verity ήταν ο κιθαρίστας των θρυλικών Argent στους οποίους έπαιζε ο πατέρας του Steve Rolford.
Οι RIO με αυτή τη σημαντική βοήθεια πίσω τους ηχογραφούν το 1984 το σίνγκλ “Breaking the Rules” που έκανε αίσθηση ιδιαίτερα στην χώρα τους την Αγγλία. Όμως πριν προλάβουν να ηχογραφήσουν ολόκληρο το άλμπουμ άρχισαν τα προβλήματα με την αποχώρηση του ντράμερ Dave Kilminster ενώ το όνομα ΒΟΜΒΑΥ έπρεπε να το αλλάξουν διότι ανακάλυψαν ότι το είχε κατοχυρώσει ένα αμερικάνικο γκρουπ.
Η αντίδραση της μπάντας ήταν άμεση και αλλάζουν το όνομα τους σε RIO και οι John Neill (αναλαμβάνει και ρόλο κιθαρίστα) και Steve Rolford συνθέτουν και ηχογραφούν στα Livingston και Liverpool Road Studios το ντεμπούτο τους άλμπουμ που κυκλοφορεί το φθινόπωρο του 1985 και το βαπτίζουν “Borderland”.
Τα εννιά τραγούδια που ακούμε στο άλμπουμ είναι πραγματικά διαμάντια για τους οπαδούς του aor/melodic rock και τα λατρεύει σχεδόν όλα.
Eξαίσιες μελωδίες, εμπνευσμένες ερμηνείες, δυνατές κιθαριστικές δομές και το σφιχτοδεμένο ρυθμικό background δίνουν μία όμορφη λάμψη σε όλο το δίσκο. Ξεχωρίζουν τα εκπληκτικά “Don’t Wanna be the Fool”, το λατρεμένο “Straight to the Heart”, το “Tommy Cant’t Help It” (απίστευτη μελωδία και ερμηνεία στο ρεφρέν), o μικρός ύμνος “Shy Girl” και το ομώνυμο κομμάτι.
Την παραγωγή έκανε ο έμπειρος και βραβευμένος Stephan Galfas (Cher, Saxon, Meat Loaf, Stryper, ΕLO) δίνοντας ακόμη πιο εμπορική χροιά στις συνθέσεις.
Ο συνδυασμός των RIO ήταν απλός και έξυπνος αφού πάντρεψαν τον αμερικάνικο ραδιοφωνικό μελωδικό ροκ ήχο με τον ήχο των συμπατριωτών τους FM, SHY, Virginia Wolf και Αirrace χωρίς φυσικά να γίνονται υπερφίαλοι ή βαρετοί.
Το “Borderland” διαδέχτηκε στη συνέχεια το συμπαθητικό “Sex Crimes” (1986) που κινείται στους ίδιους melodic και hard rock ρυθμούς με στόχο οι RIO να επιμένουν να επιβληθούν στο συγκεκριμένο κοινό.
Τραγούδια που ξεχωρίζουν είναι τα “Highschool Rock”, “Danger Zone”, “Guilty”, “Bad Blood” και φυσικά το ομώνυμο κομμάτι ενώ σ΄αυτό το άλμπουμ η μπάντα φλερτάρει έντονα με ήχους που ξεκινάνε από τους Journey και φτάνουν ως τους Dokken.
Η εμπορική αποτυχία του δίσκου ήταν καθοριστική για την μετέπειτα πορεία του γκρουπ και οδήγησε σε ανακατατάξεις οι οποίες όμως δεν έφεραν την επιθυμητή ηρεμία στους RIO με αποτέλεσμα να διαλυθούν.
Η ιστορία δεν πρόκειται να γράψει με χρυσά γράμματα τους RIO αλλά δεν πρόκειται και να τους αγνοήσει.
Νομίζουμε ότι αν και έβγαλαν μόνο δύο άλμπουμ αξίζει να τους τσεκάρετε και ειδικά όσοι είστε λάτρεις μελωδικού ήχου οφείλετε να τους αγαπήσετε.
