RICHARD GRIECO - Waiting For The Sky To Fall (1995)
Some of you should remember Richard Grieco, an ’80s pop-culture actor who was a rising star in Hollywood at the end of that decade starring in the TV series ’21 Jump Street’ with Johnny Deep.
In 1991, Grieco made his feature film acting debut in the James Bond spoof ‘If Looks Could Kill’ (the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack was posted on this blog a couple years ago) where he starred as Michael Corben.
He followed it up with the crucial role of Bugsy Siegel in ‘Mobsters’ (1991) with Christian Slater, Anthony Quinn and Lara Flynn Boyle. But after that, his career suddenly derailed and began a rapid descent into obscurity.

Well, seems Grieco was always involved with music as well, playing guitar and writing lyrics. He is the brother-in-law of Jon Dunmore (who has released some cool AOR albums) and between Richard’s actor duties both make music together in irregular intervals.
Then Grieco met songwriter extraordinaire Mark Spiro, who was impressed by the actor’s lyrics, and they started to write songs and recording demos.
By 1994, Grieco signed a record contract with the German label Edel Records, and released the CD “Waiting For The Sky To Fall” the following year.

Most of the songs in this CD were penned by Mark Spiro, while Grieco contributed much of the lyrics. Spiro, apart from producing the material, brought into the studio great session musicians such as guitar player / songwriter Tim Pierce (who also contributes with a song from his pen).
“Waiting For The Sky To Fall”, as expected, has a pristine and clear production. Musically, if you like high quality, refined AOR music, you will enjoy it greedily.
In fact, it’s like a Mark Spiro ‘lost album’, but not the acoustically tingled of his nineties albums, this is electric and pretty much ’89-’91 style-wise with a sophisticated sound.
Richard Grieco’s vocals aren’t the most heart wrenching in the World, but the guy can sing a melody and write tasteful lyrics.

Only released in Germany, “Waiting For The Sky To Fall” was a successful album, as many of the tracks were used in a popular local TV Series.
Now out of print, it’s impossible to find a copy anywhere.

Tim Pierce – Guitars, songwriter
Jon Dunmore – Guitar, Keyboards, songwriter

…and many more.

In January 1994 the long held dream of Richard to make his own CD became reality when he and the Dunmore band signed a record deal with Edel Record Company in Germany and released a single CD called ‘VOICE WITH NO NAME’. They released the single in Germany first and it was soon followed by an album called ‘WAITING FOR THE SKY TO FALL’, that was released in spring 1995. Which was spread thoughout Europe.
The European public was very enthusiastic about his cd. It turned out to be a success. And today, even after the CD is out of print, many people still want to own it.

Some of the songs on the album were used in the 1994 television series ‘Marker’. Richard was also responsible for the theme song of Marker, with Mark Spiro.

when Richard Grieco released his debut album Waiting for the Sky To Fall back in 1995,  I was amongst the first to snap it up.  Gotta thank RTL4 in The Netherlands, not only did they show Booker un-encrypted on satellite, but they also played the video of Waiting For the Sky to Fall, so at least could watch that and wear out the video tape.  I still have it along with my Bookereps (yes on video! SO?)

For those who missed out, would love to relive their misspent youth, something about that phrase which makes me refer to it over, never mind.  I’ll think of a different one eventually.

It may not appeal to everyone and some may even call it an acquired taste, with which I don’t agree.  Yeah I admit my reason for getting it was cos it was Richard’s creation, so I was/still am into anything he does.  Been a fan for many years and counting – quarter century kind of sounds cool.  Dedication, obsession who cares!

Richard has a distinct voice, he sounds a little Bryan Adams to me and a lot of his lyrics are meaningful, others are just rocking.  Many of the tracks were used in Richards show, Marker which was enjoyable too and would have run for a lot longer, but them’s the decisions of Networks, they get it wrong 90% of the time! As Fox did with Booker! Tsk.

My favourite song is the title Waiting for the Sky to Fall for various reasons, it can pick you up when you’re down, at least it worked for me, sending me to a whole different thought plane.  Music is often called a drug, but one that doesn’t cause you to have withdrawals unless you’re waiting around for more songs.  The album was successful in its native Germany where it was released.  It’s edgy with a sophisticated style and sound.

The Track I believe In You for some reason took me back to being at school, college, it was a song about being young and carefree. Lasting/losing friendships.
Okay there are a few out there who wanted me to mention Lay Your Body Down cos it sends them to a whole other plane, one of fantasy and dreams (wet) ooh!  There done.

You will know Richard from 21 Jump Street and spin off  series Booker.  As well as various other films, movies such as If Looks Could Kill (aka Teen Agent in UK), Mobsters.  Currently he’s concentrating on his art.
