“Taste the Pain” is a song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers from the album Mothers Milk, and was the third and final single from that album. The music video was filmed with the band playing in an art room, where artists are in the middle of painting a mural artwork, directed by Tom Stern and Alex Winter. A slightly longer version of the song also appeared on the soundtrack for the film Say Anything…. The song was recorded prior to Chad Smiths joining the band; drums are played by Fishbones Philip “Fish” Fisher. When the song is played backwards, the voice heard at the start is Anthony Kiedis clearly singing the chorus. This song also features a trumpet solo by Flea.
“Show Me Your Soul” was recorded during the Mothers Milk sessions and was also later released as a single in 1990. “Millionaires Against Hunger” was recorded during the 1985 Freaky Styley sessions. The song was featured on the film Say Anything… starring Kiedis’ girlfriend at the time, Ione Skye.
The single reached number twenty-nine in the UKthe highest position for the band up to that point.
Despite being a popular single for the band they rarely performed it live and the song hasn’t been performed live since the Mothers Milk tour.

Loving the old Chilis right now!

Lyrics:

flat on my back
in a lonely sprawl
i stare at the ceiling
because i can not fall
asleep tonight
no not at all
head lights flash
across my bedroom wall
crying eyes open
because i can not fall
in love with you
no not at all

walk away and taste the pain
come again some other day
aren’t you glad you weren’t afraid
funny how the price gets paid

busted in two
like a brittle stick
i can not drink
because my throat constricts
lovesick from you
that will never do
open my mouth
i couldn’t make a sound
i could not scream
i could not shout
it out to you
nothing to do
walk away and taste the pain
come again some other day
aren’t you glad you weren’t afraid
funny how the price gets paid

this may come as a shocking surprise
i have to take a walk
i have to kiss it goodbye
goodbye my love
goodbye my love
i am not alive

walk away and taste the pain
come again some other day
aren’t you glad you weren’t afraid
funny how the price gets paid
