Praying Mantis at this stage of their career had caught a second wind and were riding on the huge wave of popularity coming out of Japan. Still with the basis of the band intact, apart from new singer Colin Peel, who when added to the mix, really does have a great voice suited to Mantis’ style of melodic rock. The twin guitar work of Messrs Stratton and Troy are a force to be reckoned with in the rock scene, and on this opus ‘A Cry For The New World’ we are not exactly breaking new ground, but the commitment and class carries it off. Punctuated by subtle keyboard pieces in the background, the predominant guitar attack never lets up.
The calibre of songs are lifted a notch too, with the title track ‘A Cry For The New World’, the rampant ‘Letting Go’, the grinding guitar of ‘One Chance’ and ‘Fight To Be Free’ all competing with each other for attention. Keyboard parts and guitar interplay comes to the fore on ‘Rise Up Again’, an anthemic slice of rock if ever there was one. ‘Open Your Heart’ is not too far behind on the keyboard front, though the track is less dynamic. ‘Dream On’ is a slower piece, with orchestral leanings and super melodic choruses. ‘Journeyman’ is a longer workout and gradually builds to a climax towards the albums final track ‘The Final Eclipse’, a dreamy atmospheric close out.

This is a typical Mantis album in that it deploys their trademark pulsating guitars and vocal harmonies, and it varies in style and tempo; but is best listened to a couple of times before making a judgement as it grows on you.
The first track-Rise Up Again- has a catchy chorus that will be going round your brain for the rest of the day.
The second track -the title one- is a power track that you would associate with the band.
The third track -A Moment in Life- opens with an acoustic Spanish sounding introduction before the electric guitars take over- an interesting and varied mixture.
Tracks 4 to 8 are typical Mantis power tracks, while track 9 again deploys the Spanish acoustic guitar work.
Track 10 is another power track followed by a short instrumental to finish the disk off,
This album is varied in length of tracks, style and tempo.

What can I say??Discovered this band few days ago(that’s incredible but it’s the truth!).This cd is simply amazing and awesome! What harmonies and choruses! It’s a five stellar work,IMO.Explosive stunning musicianship with super melodies and arrangements.Everyone should have a cd like this one.9.5/10!
is this the same guitarist with the band Lionheart that had the album titled Hot Tonight? I will track this one down. Very good album, containing amazing songs like rise up again, journeyman and the self titled. However to me, their best album is Forever in Time
My favourite tracks here are “Rise up again”, “Fight to be free” (fine hookline that can make you cry), “Dream on” & “Journeyman” with “The final eclipse” fitting perfectly as an end. I like the cover a lot too
Dennis Stratton had success with LIONHEART & IRON MAIDEN. GOOD CD AOR/POMP METAL HUGE HARMONIES & good singer WORTH CHECKING. “a cry for the new world” and “open your heart” are the highlights!
