ROADBURN MAGAZINE
Wine, Women and Song are three of the Devil’s playthings, says the cover and inside page of the new Porn record. I guess we could add the slide guitar and volume are two more of the Devil’s playthings.
The part of the Devil will played for this review by Tim Moss, guitarist, founder and guiding force of Porn. It’s really easy to cast Moss in this role, I mean, there’s just something inherently creepy about all the music that he’s made, whether it was with Ritual Device or The Men of Porn. Moss just exudes dark seediness, both with his voice and with his guitar sounds.

On his newest release, there is obvious veil of maleficence and sickness. This is evident before you even open the CD case. The cover is a pallid, bloated boy/cherub done in chiaroscuro style reminiscent of the old Italian masters. The painting style serves to enhance the cherub’s sickly/sweaty sheen, and the fact that it’s reclining in some of post-coital or heroin-induced bliss provokes deeply unsettling thoughts.
Once you’ve actually put the CD on, the lyrics bring overt drug references, satanic references, and much more unsettlingly, the refrain from “Last Song”, during which Moss states repeatedly  more

5.00 starsThere is a common line when discussing side projects of major bands. it goes, “If you coming for X, you will be disappointed. Y is nothing like X” Well, If you come to this for Melvins, you probably won’t be disappointed.

Okay, Porn isn’t the Melvins. One buzz’s bizarre vocal theatrics and unique take on metal isn’t here, hell, Dale doesn’t even do his normal interesting drum solos. That being said, this is sludgey stoner metal, and i don’t know many Melvins fans that don’t have a soft spot for this type of music.

It’s also really good stoner metal with lots of weird dark sludgy psychedelic bits. Also, this is a full band and dale is just one element, the bass, the guitar are all interesting and great. Like I said, not one Croveresque drum solo on here

It’s really good, and any Melvins fan would adore this

This is some baaadass rock. High praise to Moss, Anderson, and Crover for turning this out. “Last Song” is like a ZZ Top tune filtered through a bucket full of the thickest nicotine and whiskey tinged tar you could scrape out of a 99-year old chain smokin’ alcoholic’s lungs… who had sold his soul to the devil more than once for a stay of execution. And the other tracks ain’t far behind.

…This rules supreme, when I put on Wine, Women and Song I am immediately in a haze. Well what did you you expect when you put Billy Anderson, Dale Crover and Tim Moss in a studio together? There is really no chance of this can go wrong and it’s gonna be plenty loud and heavy as can be. This recording is an unstoppable stoner rock odyssey with plenty of torturing feedback. Of course Dale doesn’t just lay back and let Moss stand in the spot light. The addition of Crover takes the intensity level of Porn beyond any of its previous incarnations he pounds the shit out of that drum kit of his. His drumming is like a drunk prostitute, rough n’ ready. Let us not forget the one and only Billy Anderson his bass tone is magic. Pure feedback genius and there is no escape played through a stack of Orange amps that is so loud and bright it is hard on the ears and eyes. If yer looking for a disc that will clear a room full of those annoying Coldplay fans this is it. Grab a case of your favorite beer crack one open, load up the bong and turn up the volume.
