ON TRIAL: Live
This band from Denmark is notorious for tearing it up on stage but this takes the mushroom-flavoured biscuit.’Live’ features some of the awesome 60s psych classics that adorned ‘Head’ mixed up with numbers from previous albums, ‘Blinded By The Sun’ and ‘New Day Rising’. With an impressive catalogue behind them, On Trial continue to deliver the goods and this is no exception. On Trial were formed over 13 years ago as a reaction to the (then) Danish music scene. Their first 7″ single in 1989 bought them to instant recognition within the Scandinavian scene. This gained the band an excellent reputation (via magazines & word of mouth) and elevated them to the status of one of the better bands on the Danish Underground. An immediate tour of Scandinavia with the Nomads ensued. Four years of relentless touring, rehearsing and drug abuse saw a new groovier, heavier sound develop with inspiration from bands like Love, MC5, 13th Floor Elevators and Black Sabbath. In this period of time the band also recorded their 1995 album “Seventy Kilometres of Underwater Nothingness, Kaptain!” which is now extremely collectable and set the path for the bands future. On Trial continued to tour Europe and were signed to SPV Records and immediately started to record the psychedelic rock album “Head Entrance” album in their own home studio, which was released in 1997. This album had the feel of the late 60s but, without sounding dated. Delerium Records heard this album and started to court the band with the interest of signing them to a home that would sympathise and understand where they were coming from. The first result of this collaboration was the “Head EP”, a collection of covers from rare 60s U.S. psyche classics performed in On Trials own style. 1999 saw the release on Delerium Records of the bands “New Day Rising” album which took the listener to freak out wonderland and back. Tours of Europe and the USA tightened the bands sound even further. The band immediately branded their mark onto the new Millenium by releasing “Blinded By The Sun” in 2002. Sounding like a cross between Love and The SoundTrack Of Our Lives, the band blended an emotional west coast flavoured sound with powerful acid guitar and melodic sensibilities. Intricate arrangements and sweeping acid psych are both essential parts of On Trials makeup and they echoed this even further on the 2003 release, “Head”. This album revisited the homage to 60s US psyche that had begun on the “Head” EP and took it to the next level with the addition of some choice new cover versions. The sound of the album, however, was all On Trial. Now, a year on, the band are back with “Live”, a complete document of the bands devastatingly powerful stage performance. Recorded in Denmark’s anarchist village, Christiana, the set-list was comprised of highlights from 3 of their previous releases, ‘New Day Rising’, ‘Blinded By The Sun’ and ‘Head’.

Recorded during two nights in the summer of 2004 at Loppen in Christiania – one of the best clubs in Copenhagen. A short, sharp and to-the-point album.
On Trial is Denmarks longest running psychedelic rock band (1986-2011) and has released many records. This is the bands first live record. The Psychedelic Freakout Party (Burnt Hippie Recordings) was released as a double vinyl only record in 300 copies and was all audience recordings, but captured the spirit of the band in the late 90s. This CD was recorded in June 2002 at Loppen in Christiania. It was the last gig with Anders (Guitar) and Guf (Drums) before they left to play full time in Baby Woodrose. It is a pretty standard set for this time period. The CD begins with Higher (from the Bad Afro 7″ record of the same title). It features a good mix of tracks from all the main records, Head Entrance (Blood Butterfly, Lovecraft), New Day Rising (Flashinghast, Do you see her, Sleeper), Blinded by the Sun (Blinded, Everything, Downer and Driver). Also included is a jam with a guest sitar player. The CD ends with a rocking version of Parchment Farm. Great stuff.
