I love this man!!! he is brilliant. his voice is like chocolate. I never thought I would see a copy of his album. I first heard him on a white label 12″” record. he is a soul singer and probably got me into this style. at a time when tune and harmony wasn’t important this guy shined!!!! well he must have made an impact because 15 years on am still looking for his work.

It’s easy to think Virgin thought they might have the next Seal on their hands when they signed Olu Rowe to their dance offshoot, Ten. He is a muscular black man, always depicted in monochrome, with bare arms or chest, against a white backdrop and he has a big, soulful voice, complimented by smooth, house productions. Whilst he sadly didn’t achieve the kind of sales Henry Olusegun Adeola Samuel did, I think Olu’s album, 1992’s ‘Reaching Out’, is pretty decent and deserving of a wider audience. A quick scan of the credits throws up names like Todd Terry and Simon Laws and there’s a nice classic Philly disco vibe running throughout. Three singles were taken from it – ‘One Nation’ (1990), ‘Forogtten Man’ (1992) and ‘Living Free’ (1992) – but check out ‘Living In The Shadow’, which is one of my favourites from the album. Aside from his own material, Olu also collaborated techno/ambient outfit, System 7 and features on their debut album, also on Ten Records.
