SPARTA- ANGEL OF DEATH, B/W TONIGHT 7? SINGLE (SUSPECT RECORDS, UK, 1981)
SPARTA were a little known NWOBHM band from Nottinghampshire who in their not so short life span only released two 7?s and one track on a compilation album. Youll get to hear all of these really soon, cause frankly: This band is another highlight of the early independent Metal movement.
Both their singles totally rule, but this is a bit better than the first. If you, coming from the Punk side of things, have soft spot for the weirdness of AK-47, youll surely love Angel of Death, as this song sounds pretty reminiscent to that after about a minute. Youll probably also think that you heard the main riff of this before. Im pretty sure a German Hardcore band from the early 80s had the same riff, but the band and song wont come into my head at the moment. Can you help? The b-side Tonight is a top-notch number too: Catchy and forceful.

Taken from the 1981 7″ single “Buried Alive”
This is the original and best version. There were two other versions of this that came later on but this is the one that is historically important and crucial to metals development. In 1981 this along with Venom, was the heaviest and most aggressive metal you could hear and is a key root of thrash. Metallica have cited this song as being one of their MAIN influences on their early material and was covered by them on their “Creeping Death” EP in 1984.
