Vengeance is the debut studio album by English rock band New Model Army, originally released on 4 April 1984 by the independent label Abstract Records. 5.0 out of 5 stars Class – no other word is suitable., Playing this again last week, I was struck by how fresh and relevant it still seems today. Most towns seem like Smalltown England these days, with working-class frustration all too easily showing itself at pub kicking out time. New Model Army, for me at least, were the band that bridged the anarcho punk bands such as Conflict and Crass to the forgotten (and thankfully short-lived) genre ‘positive’ punk, although you would struggle to find much positivity in Slade the Levellers bitter and vitriolic lyrics. The songs on this LP are crystal clear and benefit from the master bass playing of Stuart Morrow – the best player in the UK punk scene bar none. So, if you like your punk original and with passion, buy this LP – as clever today as it was back in the early ’80s.

New Model Army’s first and classic album. Recorded on an independent label before the days of EMI and Epic, Vengeance is the absolute “must have” Army album.
The production quality isn’t up to the standards of “Eight” or “Impurity”, but the passion, originality, and conviction that shines through the songs is unsurpassed by any other modern day artist.

Many (probably all) of the songs are still huge favourites at concerts, most notably “Lib Ed”, “Notice Me”, “Betcha” and the title track “Vengeance” itself. The lyrics to “Smalltown England” and many others are still relevant today, and the music has that blend of power and intelligence that enhances the meaning of the songs, rather than detracts from them.

No Army fan should be without this album. It is, and always will be, a classic. Buy it.
